Position Highlights

The College of Education is seeking two full-time professionals to join our Student Services team. The Academic Advisor II provides advising to undergraduate programs through the Main and Online campuses.

These positions supports online and in-person orientation programs, attends relevant program, college, and campus meetings, coordinates selected events, and participates in program planning. These positions work closely with advising colleagues, program coordinators and directors, faculty, staff, students, Arizona school districts, and state community colleges and agencies; therefore, this position requires clear communication, detailed documentation, and strong relational and community-building skills.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provides drop-in advising assistance, including service at the Student Services Front Desk and scheduling appointments when necessary.
  • Assesses individual student's stages of development (academic, career, and personal) and promotes student growth by determining suitable developmental tasks; assists student in establishing realistic and attainable academic and career goals while providing the student with a sense of belonging.
  • Approves and certifies students' programs of study for fulfillment of graduation requirements; approves and verifies proposed changes to programs and assists students in their completion; determines if all requirements such as general education, major, grade point average and total units have been met.
  • Evaluates academic credentials for transfer of credit, professional admission, and graduation requirements, making exceptions to program requirements under the auspices of Education faculty program directors.
  • Assists students in their persistence and degree completion by monitoring academic progress of students; determines eligibility and satisfactory progress toward degree; identifies current and potential needs or problem areas and refers students to appropriate campus resources for assistance; identifies the levels and types of support that a student needs to thrive.
  • Assists students in identifying factors that contribute to lack of academic progress; helps students examine alternatives when goals are unattainable; applies appropriate retention strategies to support student's growth mindset.
  • Advises students in academic difficulty to develop academic action plan; reviews petitions for re-admittance; interviews re-admission applicants; recommends re-admittance or denial and monitors students' progress.
  • Works with Deaf Studies, Mild-Moderate Disabilities, and Rehabilitation Studies & Services majors, as well as American Sign Language and Special Education & Rehabilitation minors; OR Leadership & Learning Innovation majors and associated TLS department minors; and candidates exploring these majors and minors.
  • Works with specialized program faculty, staff, and students.
  • Helps build community within assigned programs.
  • Serve as a liaison to the academic departments that house assigned majors/minors and to campus partners.
  • Speaks to various organizations, students, and prospective students about the College of Education for recruitment and orientation purposes; prepares materials to promote and support the program and designs presentation format to address concerns of varied groups; advises students regarding eligibility and admission procedures; assists with recruiting transfer students and incoming first year students (may require evening or weekend presence).
  • Using University systems, maintains student files and advisor notes, and provides information and statistical data upon request.
  • Understanding and regular use of University systems such as UAccess (Peoplesoft), Trellis (Salesforce), Microsoft Office Suite, etc.
  • Maintains knowledge of regulations and policies that impact students' educational options.
  • Coordinates selected events, special projects, and events, promoting a student-centered culture with the understanding that students come with many intersecting identities (may require evening or weekend presence).
  • Working under limited or minimal supervision except for new projects or concepts.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of FERPA and ethical principles in working with students.
  • Skill with computer & data collection systems such as student information systems (Peoplesoft, Salesforce), Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat Pro DC, etc.
  • Detail oriented, self-motivated, and highly organized.
  • Ability to track paperwork and follow-up on procedures.
  • Efficient at priority setting and time management.
  • Ability to multi-task and function in a dynamic environment.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work with faculty.
  • Ability to work with students online or in person.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree is required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience required.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or in process of completing a graduate degree program.
  • Experience with PeopleSoft and Salesforce software.
  • Experience with using computer software such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Publisher, Teams, Outlook), Adobe Acrobat Pro DC, etc.
  • Experience with University of Arizona policies and procedures.
  • Experience with the Arizona General Education Curriculum (AGEC) structure and transfer student populations/needs.
  • Experience with American Sign Language.
  • Experience providing academic advising and/or academic support in education.
