Description

Are you passionate about developing staff and building, motivating, and inspiring teams?

Are you excited by the challenge of understanding and analyzing complex systems?

Do you look to lead others while still performing meaningful technical work that contributes to solving some of our nation's most critical challenges?

If so, we are looking for someone like you to join our leadership team in the Information Fusion and Artificial Intelligence Group!

In the A4I Information Fusion and Artificial Intelligence Group we design, develop, and apply algorithms from a variety of disciplines (e.g., artificial intelligence, data science and information fusion) to enable successful warfighter execution of both non-kinetic and hybrid engagement capabilities.

We are seeking a motivated technical leader to be the Supervisor of the Data Science, Analytics and Software (A4I-2) section. As a key member of the group leadership team, you will help define, implement, and analyze innovative concepts that meet our sponsors' most challenging problems. The Section Supervisor will lead a team of engineers and mathematicians focused on development of data science, analytics, and software solutions.

As a Section Supervisor, you will...

  • Establish and evolve subject matter expertise across your section in data science, data engineering, software engineering, artificial intelligence, and others as appropriate.
  • Inspire and empower A4I-2 staff to continuously improve in all aspects of their careers. Create an environment where staff are encouraged to inspect the status quo and consistently strive to increase the impact of their efforts. Communicate frequently with staff on aspects of their technical tasking and connections to related efforts within and outside A4I.
  • Identify and prioritize tasking that enables high impact for air and missile defense missions, provides growth opportunities for Section staff, and encourages the development of future leaders.
  • Lead the pursuit of AMDS Program Development funds (IR&D, Propulsion Grants, B&P) within the Section to begin developing promising new technologies.
  • Ensure the Section has the vital competencies and resources needed to meet the needs of sponsors and vision of the Group. Create personnel requisitions when needed, and then screen, interview, and recommend prospective employment candidates.
  • Ensure the effective planning and execution of Section tasking. Work with task leaders and program management to establish priorities, ensure full coverage for section members, and gain valuable feedback on contributions of your staff. Interact frequently with Group management on all aspects of staff tasking, development, and performance, to include timely recognition and reclassification nominations for deserving staff members.
  • Provide direct support to the Group Supervisor for vision setting; strategy development; setting execution priorities; recruiting/hiring/training new staff; proposing technical work that aligns with Group interests, AMDS Program Manager interests, and staff interests; and reviewing all technical work performed in your Section to ensure quality and timely products.

  • Advocated for an activity to drive a novel solution to an existing problem.
  • Demonstrated strong organizational and leadership abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead staff on a technical task.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills, written and oral communications skills, and organizational skills.

If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

Some additional local travel (within 50 mile radius of JHU/APL) to meet with sponsors, government labs, and contractors is expected. Some aspects of this position may occasionally require work hours in early mornings, evenings or weekends.
