Apparel Materials Developer
for a global footwear and apparel brand in Portland, Oregon (Hybrid) Description
Our client, a global leader in footwear and apparel innovation, is seeking a Manager, Materials Development - Apparel to drive the creation, sourcing, and development of high-quality materials that bring bold design visions to life. This role is pivotal in connecting design, development, and sourcing - ensuring that every fabric, trim, and print meets brand standards for performance, sustainability, and style. As a key member of the apparel creation team, you'll oversee material development from concept through production, ensuring all timelines, quality benchmarks, and cost targets are achieved. You'll collaborate with internal partners across design, product development, sourcing, and sustainability, as well as external Tier 2 suppliers, to deliver materials that support both creative and commercial goals.
Serve as the key contact and consultant for all apparel material-related questions across design and product development
Lead cross-functional discussions, drive material selection, and oversee material consolidation for improved efficiency
Partner with Tier 2 suppliers to translate design concepts into innovative, sustainable, and commercially viable materials
Manage all seasonal material developments and initial price negotiations with suppliers during the development phase
Ensure timely testing and approval of all selected materials in line with internal quality standards and calendar timelines
Maintain material data accuracy in internal systems (technical specs, cost, lifecycle, toolbox)
Identify new sources and emerging trends through trade shows, supplier meetings, and collaboration with internal innovation teams
Support the translation of innovation and sustainability concepts into business-ready materials and collections
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Textile Engineering, Material Science, Apparel Design, or a related field
2+ years of experience in apparel material development or a related field
Strong knowledge of the apparel creation process and fabric construction methods
Excellent communication, presentation, and influencing skills
Highly organized and capable of managing multiple material development cycles simultaneously
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and material database tools; familiarity with 3D creation processes a plus
English fluency required; additional languages beneficial
Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as needed
This is a 6-month contract, full-time at 40 hours per week, with a hybrid schedule in Portland, Oregon. The pay for this W-2 position is $35 per hour, depending on experience. This position may be eligible for PTO, health and dental insurance, and/or 401(k) benefits upon meeting certain length of service and hours requirements.
