The Policy Analysis intern will assist the policy analysis division in providing economic and data analysis to the American Petroleum Institute's Policy, Economics, & Regulatory Affairs Division. This division represents all segments of the oil and natural gas industry-upstream, midstream, and downstream-and provides support to members of the American Petroleum Institute on issues affecting the industry. In this role, the policy intern will work closely with API's economists and other subject matter experts while also participating in a robust summer-internship program.

Projects and Tasks

  • Assist the team in analyzing proposed legislation and federal regulations. This task includes evaluating federal regulatory impact analysis to understand and potentially estimate a regulation's impact on the oil and natural gas industry.
  • Analyze and track data related to the industry, working with a variety of databases and publications that focus on emission estimates, scenario forecasts, and employment trends. This task also includes implementing best practices for database construction-proficiency with Excel required.
  • Provide quick response primers, memos, and slide decks that help inform internal and external stakeholders on topics related to the oil and natural gas industry. Applicants should possess a strong ability to research quickly and communicate complex ideas succinctly.
  • Support advocacy efforts through the development of materials that highlight the importance/benefits of the oil and natural gas industry. This includes supporting API's communications team by generating graphics and data as well as fact checking external communications.

Qualifications

  • Graduate or undergraduate student pursuing an economics degree, preferably with a background in energy issues.
  • Understanding of economic concepts, and knowledge of statistical programs.
  • Attention to detail and desire to learn more about the industry and the US legislative/regulatory process.

Physical Requirements

  • Able to remain in a stationary position working on a computer
  • Move about the office to access office machinery, meeting rooms, etc.
  • Operate a computer and other office machinery such as printers and copy machines
  • Transport items and equipment up to 25 lbs. on occasion

Travel Requirements

  • Up to 25%
