Assistant/Associate/Professor of Clinical Psychiatry Assistant/Associate/Professor of Clinical Psychiatry and Medical Director of Inpatient Psychiatry Hiring Department: Department of Psychiatry Location: 1601 W. Taylor St., Chicago IL 60612 Requisition ID: 1038542 Posting Closing Date: 01/09/2026 Compensation: $240,000-260,000, commensurate with experience Job Summary: The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) is seeking to recruit a Medical Director of Inpatient Psychiatry to our teaching unit. This is a clinician-educator position (non-tenured) with predominantly inpatient clinical and administrative responsibilities. UI Health includes a 462 bed hospital with a 34 bed locked Inpatient Psychiatry unit that is organized around four treatment teams with specific specialties, including women's mental health, psychosis, mood and anxiety, and med-psych. Each team consists of an attending, one or two residents, several medical students, a dedicated social worker and other trainees. The medical director will work closely with all four treatment teams, the unit nursing director and the director of psychiatric social work to maintain a collaborative, patient- centered approach to treatment and recovery. The ideal candidate will be able to collaborate well with leaders in other as well as inpatient services, including the Emergency Department. This position includes teaching and supervision of residents, medical students and other trainees, in both inpatient and outpatient settings and shared on-call duties both as an inpatient attending and as inpatient medical director. The applicant must be a Doctor of Medicine and have completed an ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) accredited residency in Psychiatry. The applicant must possess or be eligible for an unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Illinois, a State of Illinois Controlled Substance License, and an unrestricted Drug Enforcement Administration license, and must be Board-Certified in Psychiatry. Experience and interest in teaching and supervising medical students and residents in an inpatient setting is essential. UIC Psychiatry is one of the largest departments in the Midwest, with a strong General Psychiatry Residency Training Program and several fellowships, including Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Addictions, and Women's Mental Health. We are also one of the top ranked teaching departments at University of Illinois College of Medicine, the largest medical school in the country, with both preclinical and clinical teaching and mentoring opportunities. Our clinical services focus on diverse and vulnerable patients, serving predominantly minority and economically underserved populations on the South and West Sides of Chicago. Our inpatient psychiatry unit includes the only Med-Psych unit in Chicago, as well as the only unit that regularly accommodates pregnant patients. We are also a nationally known basic and clinical research enterprise, ranked first in Chicago and top 20 nationally by NIH funding, with foci in mood and anxiety disorders, women's mental health, late life depression, addictions, and mental health services, with multiple opportunities for collaboration and translation of research towards serving our clinical populations. Benefits and Compensation: The previously determined salary range for this position is $240,000.00 to $260,000.00.
