The Position

2026 Summer Intern - Biological Research - AI Development

Department Summary

We seek a highly motivated research intern to join Genentech's Biology Research AI Development (BRAID) team. At BRAID, we develop machine learning methods for various applications in research biology and target discovery. The successful candidate will work closely with a team of machine learning scientists and computational biologists to evaluate and develop foundation models for transcriptomic sequencing data. The work will be focused on causal in-context gene-regulatory network inference, with applications in oncology research. A successful candidate for this role should have practical experience in deep learning, language models, and state-of-the-art Python-based machine learning libraries. Ideal candidates would have a working knowledge of biological sequencing data (especially single-cell data), experience in causal inference, and experience with biological foundation models.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.

The Opportunity

  • Investigate single-cell foundation model pretraining objectives and confounding factors.

  • Develop novel pretraining objectives for single-cell foundation models to minimize confounding. Train and evaluate models on public and internal data.

  • Summarize and present findings during internal peer review meetings.

  • Contribute code to internal shared codebases.

  • Submit findings to relevant conferences and/or journals.

Program Highlights:

  • Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in May/June 2026.

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

  • Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

  • Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.

  • Present work to senior leaders and implement models in organizational pipelines.

  • Lead or participate in intern committees to design and coordinate program events and initiatives.

  • Professional and personal development curriculum throughout the program, including networking opportunities, workshops, and panel discussions.
