This position is fixed-term and ends on May 31, 2026.

Purpose

The Research Scholar will conduct research related to mass shootings in rural, border communities in Texas that have histories of violence. The Research Scholar will work collaboratively with the Principal Investigator, Co-Principal Investigators, Project Director, and project team. The project is interdisciplinary, involving multiple units at UT Austin, including the Department of History and the Department of Sociology at the College of Liberal Arts, the Steve Hicks School of Social Work, and the Institute on Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault. The Principal Investigator will supervise the project manager. This position requires travel approximately twice a month for 1-2 nights.

Responsibilities
  • Performs planning and management of social science and history research projects, including institutional review board processes, the collection and authentication of data, analysis, reporting, and presentation of findings to stakeholders, local, state, and national audiences.
  • Conducts report writing in partnership with research team members on the results of research findings and provides writing support for grant activities, with a focus on translation of findings for practitioner audiences.
  • Works with team members to recommend, develop, and execute funding applications, including conceptual and theoretical frameworks to address the topic areas of mass shootings in rural, border communities, history, research method design, and project management plans.
  • Act as a consultant with local, state, and national stakeholders and facilitate the dissemination of findings.
  • Supervise and provide opportunities for student support in their assignments and professional development.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications

Master's degree with at least 4 years of knowledge and experience conducting research and/or evaluation in the fields of mass violence, intimate partner violence, sexual assault, and/or human trafficking or equivalent experience. At least one year of experience working with a rural community that experienced mass violence. Experience and knowledge working with traumatized populations. Demonstrated or expressed interest in collaborative teamwork and decision-making. Demonstrated interest in public scholarship, community engagement, social change, and transformation. Ability to travel approximately twice a month for 1-2 nights.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in Social Work, Sociology, Public Health, Public Policy, or related field. Knowledge and experience conducting research, evaluation, or program management in the field of mass violence, intimate partner violence, sexual assault, and/or human trafficking. Experience working with a rural community that experienced mass violence. Experience in working with topics related to Texas and the US-Mexico border region. Quantitative data analysis experience (SPSS, Excel), qualitative data analysis software (NVIVO, Atlas.ti), training or teaching experience (or similar skills). Experience working in a highly collaborative environment.

Salary Range

$60,000+ depending on qualifications

Working Conditions

Usual office environment with occasional travel to Uvalde and other partner sites for fieldwork, training, and stakeholder meetings.
