Position Summary

The Department of Art is seeking an assistant professor of Modern and Contemporary Latin American Art History whose scholarship on Latin American art employs current methods and critical theories in Art History. The appointment will begin in fall 2026 and the teaching load is two courses per semester (2/2). The successful candidate must be able to assume a full teaching load in both the lower and upper divisions of undergraduate instruction, as well as on the graduate level. The latter will entail serving on B.A. and B.F.A. Honors, M.A., M.F.A., and Ph.D. committees in the department and possibly in other departments. Additional responsibilities will include advising students at the M.A. and Ph.D. levels who are specializing in Modern and/or Contemporary Latin American Art History. The person hired for this position will not only teach Modern and Contemporary Latin American Art History at the upper division levels but also lower division general service courses in the department as needed. We are not designating a specific secondary area of expertise to offer flexibility, although the successful candidate must be able to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses in a secondary area in art history that complements the work of existing faculty.

The Art History program is part of the Department of Art, which includes Studio Art and Art Education. Art is one of four departments in the College of Fine Arts at the University of New Mexico along with the Departments of Music, Theater and Dance, and Film and Digital Arts. The University of New Mexico is located in Albuquerque, the largest city in New Mexico with a population of 600,000 inhabitants. The city is on the Rio Grande at an altitude of 5,200 feet and is bordered by the Sandia Mountains to the east and the West Mesa to the west. The region's unique history and demographics gives the city a fascinating mix in terms of its arts, cuisine, languages, and values. The University of New Mexico (UNM) is a large state university with a faculty of over 3,000 serving approximately 25,000 students. UNM is a Research 1 institution that offers support for faculty research with a Carnegie Community Engagement designation.

The areas of study in Modern and Contemporary Latin American Art History are integral to our overall program in Art History and of particular importance to our Art of the Americas offerings, which include Pre-Hispanic, Native American, Spanish Colonial, Modern and Contemporary Latin American, Chicano/Latinx, U.S., and African American Art. The Art of the Americas faculty specializations in our program are unique to our department and internationally recognized. UNM was one of the first universities in the U.S. to offer courses in Latin American Art History, and the Art History program has an esteemed record of scholarly production on the subject, including the mentoring of Latin American Art Historians. It is, therefore, essential that we identify and hire a qualified Modern and Contemporary Latin American Art Historian who shows promise in scholarly production and teaching to maintain our standing, our graduate program, and our unique position in the field of Art History.
