We are currently hiring a Head Brewer FT at our Boston Tap Room location
The Head Brewer is responsible for production of Angel City/Concrete Beach/Coney Island products managing process and formulation to ensure adherence to CI product specification. The Head Brewer will participate with the Brewing Operations Manager in ingredient selection and specification, research and development, and capital projects.
What You'll Brew:
- Manages process and formulation of products to ensure adherence to specification and performance targets
- Supports A&S Brewing Operations Manager in supplier relations thru raw material selection and logistics to include, but not limited to, malt, hops, yeast, spices and flavors
- Develop short and long term brand management and production schedule planning to fulfill on needs and balance off-site, on-premise requests
- Monitor key process variables and maintain a high level of adherence to targets and consistency of product
- Manage QA performance metrics for in-process product as well as product from host breweries, reporting exceptions to A&S Brewing Ops for direction and resolution
- Compiles data and generates summary reports to brewing management
- Drive capacity utilization and capital equipment requests for brewery plant and equipment
- Responsible for making brewery sanitation and safety a priority with a program that ensures all production employees are fully trained and that all safety policies and procedures are in compliance
- Maintain a schedule of routine maintenance on all mechanical systems in the brewery
- Supports ACB/CIB/CBB at contract brewers/BBC through facilitating communications of performance and QA data
- Reviews and monitors data real time to ensure adherence to CI quality standard and performance. Provides alerts and recommendations to A&S Brewing Operations Manager
- Responds to QA/QC data and reporting and amends/adjusts process and formulation as needed for adherence to CI specification thru implementation of changes to process and formulation as advised by A&S Brewing Operations
- Performs brewery process audits for ACB/CIB/CBB brands to ensure consistency/repeatability and facilitate flavor agreement across the multi-plant system, audits to include process, formulation, and sanitation practices
- Coordinates/participates in taste panel to evaluate system wide adherence to quality specification and flavor agreement across the system
- Participates in taste panel of new products including researching history of the style, sampling competitors' products from the market, and discussing development of the product based on A&S's brewing philosophy
- Responsible to participate on panel discussion regarding new products, including researching the history of the style, sampling the competitors' styles, and discuss how to make the style into an ACB/CIB/CBB beer
- Supports training objectives and initiatives thru participation in market visits, sales/office orientation (Beer Certification Program), wait staff education, draft quality audits, beer dinners, etc.
- Coordinates Brewing and Quality and Operations efforts to ensure timely procurement of raw materials for year-round beers, seasonal and specialty products
- Responsible for training and personal development of any ACB/CIB/CBB production staff or interns
- Provides vacation coverage for CI as warranted and approved by A&S Brewing Operations Manager
- Provides timely update of process and formulation changes, materials utilization, etc to A&S Brewing Operations Manager
- Work with legal department regarding new products to ensure compliance
What Ingredients You'll Bring:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Degree in Food Science, Engineering, Chemistry, or other associated Science or relevant experience required. Formal brewing education preferred
- 3+ years full time in professional brewing role
- Experience in both production and small batch brewing
- Previous management and scheduling, inventory and performance metrics/reporting
- Proven ability to prioritize and make knowledgeable, quick decisions in a fast-paced environment
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in project planning, facilities management, budgeting and financial analysis and promotions
- Experience with events planning and execution
- Experience utilizing SAP management systems
Level: 6
At the Boston Beer Company and in accordance with pay transparency laws, we are open about our salary ranges. For this role, the salary range is between $83,200 and $138,600. However, it's important to note that where the person hired starts in this range is dependent on their related experience, skillset and location. Additionally, this position qualifies for a discretionary annual bonus based on company and individual performance, and certain sales roles might include a car allowance.
