Responsibilities

Howmet Fastening Systems (HFS) is seeking a Processing Tech IV- 2nd shift in our Fullerton, CA location. HFS is a business unit of Howmet Aerospace, headquartered in Torrance, California. We hold the number one global position in aerospace fastening systems, and we're the North American leader in commercial transportation fasteners. Our high-tech, multi-material fastening systems are found nose to tail on aircraft and aerospace engines. Our products are also critical components of industrial gas turbines, automobiles, commercial transportation vehicles, and construction and industrial equipment.

Summary:

Under guidance of supervisor or trained personnel set-up and operates heat treating furnaces, baths and quenching equipment to soften, harden, temper, anneal, case harden, normalize, or otherwise alter the physical or chemical properties of precision metal fasteners and tooling. Identifies material samples, lots of fasteners, or tooling to be heat treated and obtains specifications for treatment required by reviewing materials and documents.

Essential Duties:

  • Identifies material samples, lots of fasteners, or tooling to be heat treated and obtains specifications for treatment required by reviewing materials and documents.
  • Segregates orders and material samples according to specified heat treat temperature, and places fasteners and samples into charge baskets and trays, organizing each charge for most efficient use of furnace. Records pertinent data on appropriate forms.
  • Sets furnace controls to assure specified temperature, dew point, vacuum, timing, etc., and records settings on chart and/or production log.
  • Loads charges onto conveyor or directly into furnace. Sets controls.
  • Verifies proper operation of furnace by observing pyrometer and other instruments on furnace. Adjusts controls as required.
  • Removes charge trays from furnace after specified time.
  • Rinses quenches and/or cool materials and performs hardness test as required and records results on appropriate forms.
  • Removes treated materials from charge trays to appropriate pans or other containers.
  • Places travelling documents with completed work orders and moves to holding area.
  • Heat treats material samples for laboratory testing and determination of effects of various temperatures on materials for future reference in heat treating products.
  • Records part and processing data on proper form on a daily basis.
  • Performs routine maintenance of heat treat equipment such as draining and replenishing water, oil, and solvents, checking contents of argon and nitrogen tanks and requesting replenishment, changing gas and air filters and flow raters.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED (Preferred.)
  • Working knowledge in manufacturing and quality processes and procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, work instructions and policies and procedures.
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to lift/move 30 lbs. (may not exceed per EHS policies).
  • Able to work in extreme hot environment.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
  • Able to use a respirator occasionally.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One year certificate from college or technical school; or three to six months related to experience and/or training; or equivalent combination and experience.
  • Must be able to monitor furnace and verify instrumentation.
  • Should be familiar with furnaces, generators and auxiliary equipment. Understand the procedures of loading, timing, heating and quenching.
