Job Summary

The Product Development Senior Consultant is a senior product development role responsible for shaping, evolving, and maintaining Westfield's commercial Workers Compensation, General Liability products and other casualty products. This role is deeply rooted in coverage expertise, underwriting insight, and market awareness, and is accountable for ensuring our products remain competitive, compliant, and aligned with profitability and growth objectives.

This position leads the design, evaluation, and ongoing monitoring of both proprietary and bureau-based coverage, translating emerging risks, market trends, and underwriting needs into actionable product enhancements. The consultant plays a critical role in determining what to build, when to adjust, and how products should evolve over time, balancing risk selection, coverage intent, and market opportunity.

Job Responsibilities

Product Strategy & Coverage Leadership

  • Serve as a subject matter expert for Workers Compensation, General Liability and other casualty products, providing authoritative guidance on policy language, coverage intent, and risk implications.
  • Design, develop, and maintain proprietary forms and endorsements, and evaluate bureau forms to ensure appropriate alignment with Westfield's underwriting strategy.
  • Consult with underwriting teams on complex risks, coverage interpretations, and emerging exposures, influencing both product direction and risk appetite.
  • Define and refine product development strategies to support profitability and targeted growth.

Product Monitoring & Market Insight

  • Monitor product performance, loss trends, and market trends to identify when product adjustments are needed to support profit or growth.
  • Track emerging risks, regulatory developments, economic conditions, and industry trends impacting commercial P&C lines.
  • Conduct competitive analysis to assess market positioning and recommend product enhancements, new offerings, or discontinuations.
  • Participate as a key contributor on product performance teams, bringing technical and market insight to decision-making discussions.

Cross-Functional Leadership & Product Delivery

  • Partner with Product Management, Actuarial, Underwriting, Marketing, Sales, Compliance, and IT to translate product strategy into executable solutions.
  • Lead the end-to-end product development lifecycle for assigned initiatives-from concept and coverage design through implementation and market launch.
  • Provide technical and product training to internal teams and external partners to ensure clear understanding of coverage, intent, and positioning.

Execution & Governance

  • Develop clear product proposals and implementation plans that outline scope, objectives, dependencies, and success measures.
  • Guide product initiatives through governance and implementation, ensuring changes are delivered effectively and aligned with strategic intent.
  • Identify and manage risks to successful product delivery, escalating issues as needed while maintaining focus on product outcomes.

Job Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in product development, commercial underwriting, other experience in the commercial insurance industry.
  • Bachelor's degree in business or a related field and/or commensurate work experience.

Location

  • Hybrid- defined as working three or more days per week in the office if the employee's residence is within 50 miles of Westfield Center, OH; OR Remote-if the employee resides more than 50 miles from Westfield Center, OH.

    Contributes to product strategy by defining product appetite, prioritizing enhancements, and aligning product direction with enterprise objectives for profitability and growth.
  • Product Performance Monitoring
    Monitors product performance, market conditions, and loss trends to identify opportunities or needs for product adjustments, enhancements, or corrective action.
  • Regulatory & Market Awareness
    Maintains awareness of regulatory requirements, economic conditions, and emerging industry issues that impact assigned commercial lines of business.
  • Business Acumen & Analysis
    Uses data, underwriting insight, and competitive analysis to support product decisions and recommendations.
  • Professional designations such as CIC, CPCU or similar commercial P&C designations valued.
  • Experience in SAFE Agile is a plus.
