Job Overview
Nova Space Solutions (NSS) is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our Engineering Services Department team at NASA John C. Stennis Space Center, Mississippi and NASA Michoud Assembly Facility, Louisiana. Senior Mechanical Engineer performs engineering assignments for the Engineering Services Department (ESD) for the respective site as part of the Combined Operations, Services, Maintenance, and Infrastructure Contract (COSMIC). Candidate will perform complex mechanical engineering tasks and provide technical support in compliance with current industry, code, and site standards. Specific engineering tasks include project planning and development, preliminary concepts and trade studies, design development, construction monitoring, analysis and modeling, and cost estimating for facilities, technical systems, and Special Test Equipment (STE). The Senior Mechanical Engineer also assists other discipline engineers in the preparation of plans, designs, computation methods, and reports.
Responsibilities
Essential Duties & Job Functions:
- Development of mechanical designs for construction of new or modification to existing facilities, site utilities, and process piping systems.
- Prepare plans and create specifications in conjunction with other project team members for construction packages.
- Perform engineering analyses and develop design calculations using engineering software and methods.
- Develop heat load analysis, flow models, and pressure calculations for mechanical systems.
- Fluid and gas sub-system design and detailed drawing development (P&ID, EMI and PSK).
- Design of fluid component groups (valves, regulators, pressure vessels).
- Independently performs project assignments that involve complex features in accordance with codes, standards, and other precedents of the discipline.
- Analyze and/or evaluate results of analysis using engineering techniques.
- Project planning, scheduling, and cost estimation.
- Assist in the review of vendor/contractor submittals, Requests for Information (RFIs), and change orders to bring product design from engineering phase through completed construction.
- Perform trade studies, life cycle cost assessments, feasibility studies, and conceptual design to support site-wide facility and operations improvements.
- Accomplish complete tasks of limited scope or solve problems which requires investigation of a limited number of variables.
- Provide technical oversight, mentorship, and peer review for discipline engineers.
- Monitor and report weekly on the status of all current design projects, including design schedule and actual cost.
- Technical recommendations and decision making for all on-site facilities mechanical design and construction efforts.
- Assign tasks and monitor workload for discipline engineers and designers.
- Assist other departments as needed with engineering support.
- Assist in mechanical discipline staffing decisions and hiring process.
- Develop design and construction cost and schedule estimates for proposals.
- Professionally supervise and evaluate work of other mechanical engineers.
- Control prioritization and ensure effective communication strategy implemented within discipline, and across multi-department disciplines such as electrical, civil, structural, architectural, test engineering, drafting, modeling, product lifecycle management (PLM), project management, and construction management.
- Regular interaction and communication with engineering services department manager(s) to ensure program goals are achieved.
- Conduct thorough reviews and assessments of designs, specifications and cost estimates submitted by other engineers.
- Develop team members by aligning their growth with the strategic goals. This includes identifying skill gaps, mentoring individuals, and guiding professional development to ensure our team evolves in step with organizational needs.
Job Requirements
Mandatory:
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or similar discipline from an ABET accredited university.
- Minimum of 8 years of related experience with mechanical design principles and practices; master's in science degree may substitute and count towards years of related experience.
- Knowledge of and application of current industry standards and codes (ASME, API, IBC, IPC, NFPA, LEED).
- Software experience in one or more of the following: PTC (Windchill, Mathcad, Creo), ANSYS (Fluent), Bentley (AutoPipe), AutoDesk (AutoCad, Revit, Civil 3D, ProEst), PipeFlow, Flowmaster, Carrier (HAP).
- Active professional engineer (PE) licensure registered in the state of MS or LA, or ability and desire to obtain within 1 year of hire.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen in order to obtain required NASA badge.
- Must be able to provide a certified Birth Certificate (with state seal), Passport, or INS Citizenship documents on date of hire (candidate will be sent home if this paperwork is not provided upon arrival on date of hire).
- Must have the ability to communicate the English language, both verbally and written, in an effective manner.
- Must have, and maintain, a valid Real ID driver's license.
- Must be able to pass a Pre-Employment background check and drug screen test.

- Ability to work independently but follow specific detailed instructions.
- Ability to interface with various levels of personnel in a multi-cultural, team- oriented environment and interact with all levels of management regarding project activity.
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft products (Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook, O365, and PowerPoint).
- Prior experience with projects located on Federal Government institutions.
- Attention to detail and ability to exercise good professional judgment.
