General Description

The Peabody Children's Chorus is seeking applications for an Assistant Director to work with our tenor-bass ensemble, Cantus, beginning in January 2026.

Since its establishment in 1990, the Children's Chorus has grown from 30 to over 350 singers in 11 rehearsing ensembles. Cantus was formed in 2021 and currently has 25 members.

As well as touring in Italy, France, Germany, Austria, England, Scotland, and Hawaii, the Chorus has performed with many local ensembles, including the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Choral Arts Society, and Peabody Symphony Orchestra.

The Peabody Children's Chorus values the highest artistic standards in all dimensions of our program, including choice of repertoire, tone of concerts, sound of ensembles, musicology, and performance practice; we believe in a philosophy of education that fosters self-growth and discipline through the pursuit of excellence, beauty, and concrete musical skills.

We are searching for a teacher who will nurture each chorister's potential for artistic and personal excellence, and who will foster a love of music through skill-based learning.

Artistic & Teaching Responsibilities

Under the leadership of and in collaboration with the Director, the Assistant Director will:

  • hold two weekly rehearsals, 1.5 hours each (Tuesday in Towson; Thursday in Columbia)
  • help to plan, implement and evaluate the artistic year and educational program for the Cantus ensemble
  • collaborate artistically & develop relationships with other community and professional musicalorganizations

Administrative Responsibilities

The Assistant Director will work with Chorus faculty and staff to:

  • plan and implement end-of-semester concerts and externalperformances
  • assist with recruitment, evaluations, and auditions for new and continuingstudents
  • track student progress and assist with annual placement decisions and progress reports; write recommendations for students uponrequest
  • participate in orientations for new students and their parents
Qualifications

Education requirements

Bachelor's degree in music from an accredited institution

Specific Qualifications

  • minimum of three years' experience teaching and/or conducting; piano proficiency is desirable
  • experience teaching middle and/or high-school age singers
  • knowledge of vocal pedagogy, including moveable-do solfAge; an understanding of the changing voice
  • strong communication and organizational skills

Salary Range

The referenced salary range represents the minimum and maximum salaries for this position and is based on Johns Hopkins University's good faith belief at the time of posting. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. The actual compensation offered to the selected candidate may vary and will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, internal equity, market conditions, education/training and other factors, as reasonably determined by the University.
