Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Research Teaching Specialist III for the Public Health Research Institute Center at the New Jersey Medical School.

A Research Teaching Specialist- III ( RTS- III) position is immediately available to conduct research in the area of mycobacterial host-pathogen interactions and COVID-19 pathogenesis studies using animal models under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI). The requirements include: keep abreast of technical and theoretical knowledge related to mycobacterial pathogenesis. Conduct experiments in BSL3 settings, collect, record and analyze data, prepare reports for peer- reviewed scientific publications and conference presentations, and contribute to the writing of IACUC and IBC applications and grants. Reports all research activities to the PI and trains fellows in relevant techniques as directed by PI.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Performs in vitro and in vivo research involving animals, cell lines and mycobacteria and other infectious agents as assigned by the PI.
  • Perform immunohistochemistry, in-situ hybridization (smRNA-FISH) and imaging studies on tissue samples.
  • Propagation, calibration and stocking of BSL3 pathogens for downstream applications.
  • Leading TB and/or COVID-19 experimental studies using in vitro and animal models for contract/collaborative grants.
  • Training junior investigators in specialized techniques, such as immunohistochemistry, and smFISH.
  • Plans and performs in vitro and in vivo mycobacteria and other infectious agents research using animals, primary cells and cell lines.

Qualifications






Minimum Education and Experience

  • Highly motivated researcher, Master's Degree in a relevant science plus one (1) year of related research experience, or a Bachelor's Degree in a relevant science plus two (2) years of related research experience.
  • Must have demonstrated prior experience with in vitro BSL3 research with primary cells and cell lines in the focus area.

Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must have experience with mouse and rabbit models infectious disease research in ABSL3 facilities, including injections, necropsies, sample processing for downstream analysis.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Applicants should have a strong background in cellular and molecular microbiology, immunology and TB research as demonstrated by multiple peer-reviewed publications in reputed scientific journals.
  • The candidate should maintain high level of research integrity, organization of data, competency skills, knowledge and experience to perform duties as assigned by the principal investigator.
  • Should be able to work with animal models of infectious diseases in BSL3 facilities for several hours

Equipment Utilized
Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Physical Demands: The personnel should be capable of working with animals and pathogens in BSL3 settings, wearing full-body suites and air purifier units with standing and/or sitting; Should be able to carry animals (rabbits, hamsters and mice) between BSL3 suites.
  • Work Environment: Research in BSL-2, BSL-3 and/or animal housing facilities.
