Position Summary

Expectations of the Teaching Assistant:

  • Attend all HMHV 398 classes with Dr. Cartwright in person (Tuesdays 2:00-3:40PM)
  • Need prior permission to miss up to one class
  • Can dress casually (no athleisure wear)
  • Follow professional guidance of how to speak of community, experiences, etc.
  • Be prepared with class materials, specific content, readings, etc.
  • Collect, grade and return graded assignments for all students enrolled in the assigned section
  • Assist in proctoring and grading exams as assigned
  • Keep records of student grades as instructed
  • Hold weekly office hours for student assistance, determined with Dr. Cartwright
  • Position eligible for 7-10 hours per week including HMHV 398 class time, supporting course as instructed by Dr. Cartwright and remaining hours arranged with Karen McGillvray to provide administrative support in the BA/MD office.

TA Guidelines: Rather than present material of their own, the job of the Teaching Assistant
(TA) is to clarify and integrate materials relate them to larger issues beyond
the classroom. In particular, TA's are expected to demonstrate a responsible
attitude toward the need for commitment and sensitivity to the individual
student with awareness of diversity of students in terms of cultural, racial,
gender and ethnic backgrounds, as well as differing learning styles, attend to
special needs of students with declared or apparent learning difficulties;
through and accurate correction of assignments with appropriate constructive
feedback; prompt return of corrected work. Consult with your faculty prior to
approaching students on matters relating to problematic behavior. Teaching
Assistants have the responsibility to inform the faculty in charge of any
instances of academic dishonesty that they notice in the class.
