The Biostatistician will work and collaborate with faculty and members in the Department of Public Health Sciences in the Division of Translational Research and Applied Statistics, as well as other investigators in the UVA School of Medicine, on clinical and basic science research projects. Responsibilities include: conduct programming assignments, write and review code, maintain and modify programs, and test and document modifications; analyze program performance & and take needed action; consult with users, collaborate on/support research projects, providing study specific status reports, & research publication & grant proposal support. Specific duties:
- Write Statistical Computer Programs with GAUSS ENGINE, and R or SAS:
- GAUSS Engine:
- Adapt GAUSS Platform by converting into GAUSS Engine code, enabling execution via command-line & window shell interfaces.
- Design/implement a web front-end using Python, ensuring seamless user experience.
- Integrate multiple software components to establish system connectivity.
- Deploy GAUSS Engine as a web application, facilitating efficient data simulation.
- Work collaboratively with the UVA Research Computing team to containerize the platform.
- Host GAUSS Engine as a web application within UVA's infrastructure, improving accessibility and security for researchers and analysts.
- R or SAS:
- Enhance data visualization for quality improvement in healthcare with quality improvement methodologies, including developing automated R functions to detect & visualize shifts in performance metrics, flag & highlight trends, and add upper / lower control limits.
- Conduct data automation and reporting, including: Develop automated data input workflows in R, enabling integration of future data into tables and figures without requiring manual code modifications; Design /implement automated reports with interactive tabs, dynamically generating data visualizations and tables for over 40 hospital teams; Create codes to looping structures to extract /display charts based on unique team identifiers, ensuring seamless integration of plots & structured tables with customized formatting and scrollable views. Integrated conditional logic to handle missing data and optimize report clarity; Process free-text contents, incorporating word cloud visualizations with interactive hover features displaying keyword frequency; Build downloadable report tables with Excel and PDF export options, allowing users to save structured data directly from HTML reports; Enhance HTML report usability by creating scrollable tables, ensuring optimal viewing and navigation within web-based reports.
- Conduct R Markdown Report Development across teams: Develop parameterized reports in R Markdown for users to customize analysis based on input parameters; Implement logic to handle missing values and extreme cases dynamically through parameter settings; Ensure reports can be adapted for different programs with varying data structures. Ensure reports are reproducible, automated, & easy to update with new data inputs. Generate reports in PowerPoint (PPTX) & HTML formats for different presentation and sharing needs.
- Review computer output for consistency & quality.
- Analyze data & prepare tables for interim & final reports.
- Research projects:
- Extract clinical trial data from UVA systems including OnCore and REDcap
- Generate reports displaying evaluable patient counts
- Create and format adverse event (AE) tables for analysis
- Optimize data integration for clinical trial reporting
- Ensure accuracy and consistency in trial monitoring.
- Design tables and statistical procedures for specific research studies.
- Write results sections of reports & publications.
- Develop statistical designs and planned analyses for research grant proposals.
- Develop & implement new innovative procedures in data collection, quality control, presentation of results, & statistical analyses.
- Prioritize tasks.
- Work independently to perform programming, select methods, and ensure quality of work.
- May partially work from home with division director's approval.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education: Master's or foreign equivalent in biostatistics, data science, or closely related field
- Experience: 2 years of experience as biostatistician. The required 2 years of employment experience as a biostatistician may be full or part time and may have been earned before or after conferral of the master's degree. Experience must have included: 2 years generating new code in GAUSS as well as R or SAS; 2 years of data management & data manipulation, statistical programming including generalizable multi use programs, statistical simulations studies, and statistical analysis and interpretation; and 1 year of manuscript writing.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
