Primary Responsibilities:

HDR's Mechanical Engineer will: support the mechanical design team throughout all project phases ranging from feasibility studies, programming, conceptual design, schematic design, construction documents, construction administration, commissioning, and project close-out; participate in work sessions at project sites in conjunction with other disciplines, owners, contractors, and other project stakeholders; assist senior engineers by conducting analyses to develop design options or recommendations, and assist in the preparation of cost estimates; perform psychrometric calculations for analyzing and selecting HVAC systems and equipment; understand fan and pump curves to properly select equipment for different applications; select and schedule equipment and devices for mechanical systems, working with equipment vendors to obtain equipment selections when necessary; develop sections and elevations for complex ductwork and piping areas; develop air and water flow diagrams; coordinate HVAC and/or plumbing system control requirements and intended modes of operation with controls engineers to develop control diagrams, point lists, and sequences of operation; write and edit mechanical specifications to fit project requirements; review mechanical documents for areas of conflict with all disciplines; coordinate workload to complete tasks on schedule; perform field work and verification of existing conditions where required; visit project sites as requested or as contractually required to monitor construction progress and prepare field observation reports; provide construction administration support by reviewing mechanical submittals and answering RFIs; coordinate with and assist affected disciplines with project addenda, RFIs, and change orders, and take responsibility to incorporate agreed-upon changes into the project documents; and give direction to clerical and technical personnel as needed. HDR's Mechanical Engineer will work independently on small projects and assist more senior engineers on larger projects.

Required Qualifications

  • A Master's Degree in Mechanical or Architectural Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline and 6 months of experience in mechanical engineering or a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Architectural Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline and 2 years of experience in mechanical engineering.
  • Education must include coursework in Heat Transfer, Thermodynamics, Fluid Dynamics, and Power Plant Engineering. Work experience may substitute for coursework.
  • Required experience may include professional, internship, or university research or teaching experience.
  • Must be proficient in Revit.
  • 1 to 2 weeks domestic travel in total per year.
  • Accepting licensed and unlicensed candidates. Professional Engineer licensure is not a prerequisite for this position.
  • NOTE: All HDR positions in the US may be subject to background checks and/or pre-employment drug testing.

The expected compensation range for this position is $92,092 to $171,028.
