What to Expect

Tesla Midwest Automation is a fast-paced cutting-edge engineering group, automating the production of Tesla's latest, most advanced products. Our group is tasked with finding the limits of physics in the machines we create. Tesla holds an extremely high bar for excellence and is looking for someone wanting to push themselves to their limits of knowledge and keep going. If you live to turn bold ideas into reality that will change the world, this is the place for you. You should possess humility and decisiveness: humility to ask and learn from everyone, and decisiveness to make a call when sometimes you don't have all the information you need.

What You'll Do
  • Read and interpret specifications to create concepts and layouts in 2D and 3D

  • Read and interpret product drawings and perform tolerance analysis and stack up for assembly automation
  • Work with Manufacturing and Product engineering to suggest product changes to improve automation
  • Use mechanical engineering fundamentals, analysis, and design software to create complete mechanical design concepts for robust, low-risk, and cost-efficient automated manufacturing machine designs that will complete the project scope within the budget and schedule parameters defined by the project scope documents
  • Identify areas of risk and work quickly to develop prototypes and test methods to mitigate risk
  • Lead meetings including project status and review meetings, checkout meetings, and acceptance meetings
  • Review and verify all designs and drawings of team members prior to release to ensure complete and organized detailed print packages. Coordinate and conduct release to fabrication meetings
  • Work with component suppliers to specify and acquire quotes for large commercial components

What You'll Bring
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to conceptualize and create mechanical designs from specifications and manufacturing engineering input along with suggested improvements to products

  • Experience leading a team of other mechanical engineers on large projects with substantial budgets

  • Proficiency in using solid modeling CAD design software

  • Hands on experience with prototyping (3D printing, machining, hobby projects)

  • 10+ years of experience in mechanical design

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience
