Job Summary

Under the direction of the Director of Neurodiagnostic Services and the Clinical Neurodiagnostic Supervisor (or their designees), the Neurodiagnostic Technician performs routine and complex EEG procedures for hospital inpatients and outpatients of all ages, including bedside studies and at the Midtown outpatient center.

The Neurodiagnostic Technician is responsible for the full range of neurodiagnostic studies, including routine EEGs, continuous long-term EEG monitoring, epilepsy monitoring unit procedures, and ambulatory EEG set-ups and teardowns. They use independent judgment to determine the appropriate procedure for a variety of patient populations, delivering direct patient care while ensuring patient satisfaction and safety.

This position requires adherence to ABRET/ACNS Guidelines, as well as federal, state, and local regulations, and UCDH policies and procedures. The Neurodiagnostic Technician also:

  • Serves as a resource and mentor to other members of the Neurodiagnostic team.
  • Promotes compliance with departmental policies and protocols.
  • Participates in patient and staff education.
  • Demonstrates leadership, accountability, and the ability to set priorities in complex clinical situations.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload a license and/or certification if required for the position

  • American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS), or UC Davis Health CPR
  • Must obtain the R.EEG.T. credential from ABRET within two (2) years
  • Graduation from an EEG program/school OR a combination of education and experience with a minimum of 12 months of recent neurodiagnostic experience
  • Minimum of 12 months of recent patient care or neurodiagnostic experience
  • Knowledge of current trends in Neurodiagnostic (EEG) and medical terminology
  • Ability to accurately measure and apply disc electrodes using the International 10/20 system and apply additional electrodes as needed
  • Ability to apply Neurodiagnostic principles to novel techniques and perform complex procedures
  • Commitment to maintaining up-to-date knowledge and skills to provide high-quality patient care
  • Commitment to excellence in patient care, demonstrating accountability and professionalism
  • Interpersonal skills to interact with patients, families, physicians, and staff tactfully and diplomatically
  • Ability to maintain composure and professionalism in high-stress, high-volume, or emotionally charged situations
  • Ability to protect patient confidentiality and maintain a respectful work environment
  • Effective written and oral communication, providing clear instructions and explanations

  • Basic computer skills and proficiency with electronic medical records (EMR)
  • Knowledge or ability to learn departmental and system policies, maintain clinical databases, logs, and filing systems in compliance with regulations and HIPAA

Preferred Qualifications

  • Registered EEG Technologist (R. EEG T.) credential through ABRET Neurodiagnostic Credentialing and Accreditation
  • Continuous Long-Term Monitoring (CLTM) credential through ABRET
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field
  • Experience working in an Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU)
  • Experience in acute care settings as a Neurodiagnostic Technician/Technologist
  • Proficiency in performing routine EEG examinations and continuous long-term EEG monitoring (setup and disconnect), including Phase I monitoring
  • Experience with in-lab extended EEG monitoring and ambulatory outpatient EEG (setup and disconnect)
  • Ability to troubleshoot neurodiagnostic equipment effectively
  • Skill in accurate electrode placement using the International 10/20 system, including additional electrodes to monitor physiological artifacts
  • Commitment to maintaining up-to-date knowledge and skills to provide the highest quality patient care
  • Ability to apply basic principles of neurodiagnostic technology to novel techniques and develop expertise in performing complex procedures

Department Overview

The Clinical Neurodiagnostic Labs at UC Davis Health encompass four specialty areas: the EEG Lab (inpatient and outpatient), the EMG Lab, and the Sleep Lab. Each unit is jointly managed by the Neurodiagnostic Services Director in collaboration with the Medical Director, ensuring high-quality neurodiagnostic services across UC Davis Health and the Midtown Outpatient Center. The Neurodiagnostic Technologist may also serve as a subject matter expert (SME), providing guidance and mentorship to neurodiagnostic assistants and students.

Work Environment

  • UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco-free campus effective January 1, 2014.
