About our group:

The Mechanical Product Development team is responsible for all aspects of mechanical product development within the Recording Head Technology (RHT) department. This includes HDM validation, AAB integration, factory integration, and performance and reliability assessments. The team comprises tribologists, AAB designers, product engineers, and process integration engineers, working collaboratively to ensure robust and reliable product performance.

About the role - you will:

The Product Development Senior Staff Engineer will report to the Senior Engineering Manager of the Recording Head Operations (RHO) Mechanical Research & Development group at Seagate's Bloomington, MN site.



In this role, you will be responsible for integrating emerging technology into new products to meet specific mechanical and reliability performance requirements. You will work closely with the head design team, drive design team, and Far East production teams to ensure that manufacturable head designs are developed and that performance meets drive requirements.




  • Oversee the Head-Gimbal-Assembly (HGA) mechanical design and specifications, thermo-mechanical design migration plans, and customer support activities.
  • Manage component and drive experiments, prototype and pre-production builds, component and drive performance, and effectively communicate key findings to a broad audience.
  • Collaborate with engineering groups, applying expertise in fluid dynamics, tribology, material science (thin films), thermodynamics, structural dynamics and mechanics, electromechanical systems, surface chemistry, and small particle technology.
  • Draw from experience with experimental design, data acquisition, time-series (FFT) analysis, material testing and characterization, particle doping, and statistical analysis of data.
  • Recognize the strengths and limitations of both modeling and experimental methods, maintaining focus on gaining fundamental understanding and validated performance to deliver optimized product designs.

About you:

  • Possess strong written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated collaboration and teamwork abilities.
  • Comfortable working in a diverse, global environment, engaging effectively with colleagues across multiple time zones.

Your experience includes:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field and 12+ years of experience, or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field and 8+ years of experience, or Ph.D. and 5+ years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate with the product core team, drive customers, Far East production sites, and internal functional groups on highly technical issues involving overall mechanical product design and performance.
  • Strong background in mathematical, physical, and engineering analysis.
  • Experience in data acquisition and time-series analysis, as well as optical and metrology methods such as LDV, thermal metrology, AFM, SEM, XPS, Raman, or Auger.

  • Direct experience working in a factory or manufacturing environment.
  • Strong process engineering background with practical, hands-on experience.
  • Excellent analytical skills and a proven track record as a problem solver.
  • Basic understanding of statistics and databases.



The estimated base salary range for this position is $130,374.40 - $190,018.40. The individual salary is based on work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
