Position Overview

The Associate Director, Laboratory Operations Systems plays a pivotal role in shaping and executing the strategy for laboratory information systems (LIS), master data governance, and system infrastructure across laboratory operations. This role bridges strategic planning with hands-on execution, working closely with IT and cross-functional teams to implement scalable digital solutions that enhance laboratory workflows, data integrity, and operational performance. The Associate Director supports both short- and long-term initiatives that drive innovation and efficiency in Clinical and Research Laboratories.

This position is based in Madison, WI.

Essential Duties

Include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Shape strategic plans for laboratory systems in partnership with IT, ensuring solutions support organizational priorities and operational goals.
  • Collaborate with IT to implement and maintain LIS, LIMS, and Quality systems that meet operational and compliance needs.
  • Partner with Operations to explore opportunities for aligning ERP and LIS systems, supporting more integrated and efficient laboratory workflows.
  • Lead change management and drive adoption of digital tools to enhance lab performance.
  • Align system capabilities with lab needs through cross-functional collaboration (e.g., Clinical Ops, R&D, QA, Regulatory Affairs).
  • Manage teams to deliver system improvements and maintain high-performing lab platforms.
  • Effectively manage, support, and guide your team, including, but not limited to, delegating tasks and responsibilities, assessing employee performance and providing helpful feedback and training opportunities.
  • Monitor key initiatives and escalate issues tied to lab performance and compliance.
  • Prioritize system and process enhancements based on stakeholder input.
  • Support strategic planning sessions and communications for lab operations.
  • Partner with IT and finance to build business cases for system investments.
  • Lead requirements gathering, process design, and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Oversee LIS/LIMS implementations, including validation, training, and support.
  • Maintain master data and manage system changes through formal controls.
  • Mentor team members and support their development.
  • Model inclusive, accountable leadership and communicate effectively across all levels.
  • Ensure compliance with quality standards (e.g., CLIA, CAP, ISO 15189).
  • Ability to travel 10% of working time away from work location. May include overnight/weekend travel.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Life Sciences, Business Administration, Laboratory Medicine, Biomedical Informatics, or relevant field as outlined in the essential duties.
  • 10+ years of experience in laboratory operations, business strategy, software systems or other related field outlined in the essential duties.
  • 5+ years progressively responsible experience in direct or indirect leadership roles.
  • 5+ years of experience in operational excellence/process improvement, or field outlined in essential duties.
  • 3+ years of experience with LIS/LIMS or Quality systems in laboratory settings.
  • Experience in change management and transformation programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.
  • Legal authorization to work in the country of employment without current or future sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in regulated laboratory environments (e.g., CLIA, CAP, ISO 13485).
  • Experience supporting LIS/LIMS implementations or enhancements.
  • Experience with Computer Systems Validation and change control processes.
  • Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certification
  • Strong project management skills and familiarity with laboratory workflow automation.

Salary Range:

$133,000.00 - $226,000.00

The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - WI - Madison on a full-time basis. In addition, this position is bonus eligible.
