Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.

We are seeking a Technical Professional who will support the Disruptive Manufacturing Systems Development Group in the Manufacturing Science Division, Energy Science and Technology Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). If selected, you will contribute to the development of new metal additive manufacturing systems and processes, as well as the understanding of process-structure-property relationships in ultra-large-scale advanced manufactured components targeted towards replacement of casting and forging processes.

A strong experience in both research and industry labs is required. The primary research location would be at the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF) - ORNL's Hardin Valley campus.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Conduct R&D projects and support the expansion of R&D in additive manufacturing.
  • Perform testing and verification of new additive systems and processes.
  • Network and develop collaborative R&D with other groups and divisions internally and with DOE, industry, and utilities.
  • Prepare and present research results to sponsors, peer reviewers, and others and at technical meetings.
  • In a laboratory setting, support specimen preparation and characterization of ferrous and non-ferrous structural alloys, towards understanding of their processing-microstructure-property relationships.
  • Ability to learn and execute towards multiscale characterization and defect/microstructure assessment of test articles and large-scale structures.
  • Collaborate within a multi-disciplinary research environment consisting of computational scientists, experimentalists, and engineers conducting basic and applied research in support of the Laboratory's missions.
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements per ORNL's Standards-Based Management System (SBMS).
  • Deliver ORNL's mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote equal opportunity by fostering a respectful workplace - in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A MS degree in mechanical engineering, materials science, physics, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in laboratory environments, as full-time or intern, etc.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background and expertise in metallographic specimen preparation and characterization.
  • Background and training in standard laboratory procedures, equipment maintenance, logistics and inventory management.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

Special Requirements:

  • Export control, no clearance: This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.
  • Visa sponsorship: Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Security, Credentialing, and Eligibility Requirements:

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.
  • For employment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a Real ID compliant form of identification will be required.
  • Additionally, ORNL is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions. All employees must also be able to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card as mandated by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, which requires a favorable post-employment background investigation.
  • To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.
