Post-Doctoral Associate

The Clinical Chemistry Fellowship Program at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Clinical Chemistry (COMACC). This is a two-year program for postdocs or one-year program for MDs. The Program's principal objective is to educate, train, and prepare clinical chemists to provide leadership in the field of clinical chemistry and other areas of clinical laboratory science, who will be active in research and who will serve the needs of physicians and patients. The Program strives to balance and integrate patient care, clinical service, management, research, education, and administration into the training curriculum.

Educational Objectives (adopted from the COMACC standards and guidelines)

1. A fellow should be able to demonstrate competency in directing clinical services and proficiency for initiating independent (or collaborative) research projects.
2. A fellow should be able to teach others (residents, graduate students, medical students, medical technologists, etc.).
3. A fellow must serve effectively as a consultant to physicians in the interpretation of reported laboratory values.
4. A fellow should be familiar and up to date with the newest tests, disease markers and technologies in the field of clinical chemistry.
5. A fellow should be a source of information in his/her field and educate his/her colleagues about the most recent findings in clinical chemistry by speaking at Grand Rounds, staff meetings, etc.
6. A fellow must be thoroughly grounded in the theory, operation, and maintenance of instrumentation, methodology, and the quality control measures applicable to the modern clinical laboratory.
7. A fellow must be a competent manager of people, capital equipment, budgetary resources, and have a working knowledge of the ethics of medicine and science.

Rotations

Fellows will have the following rotations:

1. Pre- and Post-analytical Systems (1 month)
2. General Chemistry (1 month)
3. Special Chemistry (1 month)
4. Biochemical Genetics (1 month)
5. Toxicology and Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (1 month)
6. Lab Management (1 month)
7. Immunology (2 weeks)
8. Molecular Pathology (2 weeks)
9. Coagulation (2 weeks)
10. Hematology (2 weeks)

Responsibilities

On-Call Duties: Fellows are expected to be on-call (carrying the chemistry pager) according to the Chemistry Call schedule. Additionally while on call fellows are expected to address emails related to patient or testing issues sent by the faculty on the service. Fellows are required to fill out Chemistry Call Documentation Sheet to document the calls. Calls should always be discussed with faculty whenever possible. This is especially the case when fellows just start the fellowship training (e.g., within 12 months). Fellows should be prepared to present these calls at the weekly Chemistry Rounds held every Thursday. All the calls that fellows dealt with during the fellowship will be scanned into a file and kept in the fellow's permanent record.

Pay Range: $71,862 - 76,589.00; depending on education/qualifications/experience
