A full-time Assistant Research Professor biostatistician position within the Exercise Oncology Research Program under the direction of Dr. Lee Jones - Division of Research Outcomes, Department of Population Sciences in the Beckman Research Institute of City of Hope. The candidate will also collaborate with Dr. Saro Armenian - Chair of Pediatrics and Director of the Division of Research Outcomes, Department of Population Sciences at City of Hope.

The Exercise-Oncology Research Program focuses on a near patient translational approach to elucidating the effects and mechanisms of highly controlled exercise in cancer prevention and control. Dr. Jones and his team leverage traditional and molecular epidemiological approaches to investigate the link between exercise and clinical outcomes in patients with and at-risk of cancer. In translation to the clinic, Dr. Jones also conducts early and late-stage clinical trials evaluating the tolerability, safety, and efficacy of exercise across the entire cancer trajectory (i.e., prevention to advanced disease). Adhering to a rigorous translational development pipeline, they are conducting phase 1/2-esque trials to evaluate the tolerability and tissue / tumor biological efficacy of exercise in persons with and at-risk of cancer. These trials evaluate both the efficacy of exercise as "single-agent" as well as in rational combination with pharmacological conventional and novel anticancer agents. To enhance conduct of these trials, they have pioneered a decentralized, patient-centric approach called the Digital Platform for Exercise (DPEx) which permits all study procedures to be conducted remotely in patient's homes and therefore, recruitment of patients from any geographical location within the US.

As a successful candidate, you will:

• Candidates are expected to demonstrate strong ability in the following areas:

• Technical skills in, or very strong desire to become proficient in novel bioinformatical approaches to apply to various multidimensional datasets.

• Knowledge of clinical trials and clinical / molecular epidemiological datasets.

• Knowledge of preparation of sequencing libraries for genomics, transcriptomic and single cell sequencing (Desired).

• Scientific independence and critical thinking (strong requirement).

• Communication skills both orally and in writing.

• Data and project documentation and management.

• Willingness to collaborate with other biostatisticians and computational biologists within and outside the division as well as educate team members on biostatistical basics and participate in clinical team meetings/events. Our team culture is collaborative and supportive.

• Candidate will be involved in grant proposal and manuscript writing and can lead manuscripts, as of interest.

• The candidate will partner with our team members and external collaborators in serving as the scientific/technical expert to help drive our multiomics, high-throughput sequencing projects and help develop any projects based on the most advanced technologies.

• A "can-do" attitude with strong self-motivation is a must; it is the expectation that candidates for this position can work independently.

• The candidate will not be expected to write independent external grants to fund their salary. Dr. Jones will be responsible for funding the position through internal and external funding mechanisms.

Your qualifications should include:

• Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Genomics or related field including Computer Sciences will be considered as well as those with Biomedical Sciences, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Cell Biology degrees but have computational skills.

• The candidate must have had at least 2 years of experience with coding in R, Matlab and/or Python, and already adapt to using the UNIX command line and executing analyses using high performance computing cluster; individuals with background in physical sciences/computer science/engineering without biology backgrounds but who want to pivot to a future career in biomedical sciences are strongly encouraged to apply

• Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability in the workplace.

Preferred qualifications:

• Postdoctoral Training Preferred.
