What Your Job Will Be Like

Sandia National Laboratories is seeking to hire an experienced Civil Engineer to support the in-house civil design and engineering capabilities within this group. The successful candidate will join and collaborate with a dynamic group of in-house architects, mechanical engineers, interior designers and other civil/structural engineers in the development, design, and construction of buildings and infrastructure projects to provide full-service in-house design services at Sandia National Labs in New Mexico.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Provide construction support to rectify issues between proposed designs and existing field conditions.
  • Perform site analysis and assessment: evaluate the physical, environmental, and regulatory conditions of the project site.
  • Coordinate surveys and geotechnical investigations to understand soil properties and topography.
  • Develop initial design concepts based on project requirements and constraints. Create preliminary sketches and models to visualize the design.
  • Conduct code compliance assessments and develop solutions for nonconformance.
  • Design for civil and utility components, systems, drainage and products and integrate these to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operations.
  • Analyze and maintain seismic site classifications for the Sandia National Laboratories' New Mexico site.
  • Partner with other Civil Engineers to assess capabilities and condition of existing civil, structural, and utility structures, components, equipment, and systems and make recommendations for improvements.
  • In partnership with other Civil Engineers to perform engineering analysis and associated calculations (drainage, utility system service connections, concrete, and pavement).
  • Apply knowledge and understanding of current codes and design requirements.
  • Develop and apply inspection and acceptance procedures for systems and components.

The selected applicant can work a combination of onsite and offsite work. The selected applicant must live within a reasonable distance for commuting to the assigned work location when necessary.

Salary Range

$99,400 - $193,600

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering plus 7 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with AutoDesk Civil3D is required
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance.
Qualifications We Desire

  • NM Professional Engineering (PE) license or Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate and able to obtain a Professional Engineer license.
  • Landscape design experience.
  • Experience in relevant civil engineering software applications: HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, PCSWMM, or related software.
  • Experience using CAD and GIS Software; Bentley MicroStation or AutoCAD, GIS Mapping (Bentley Map, ArcGIS or other).
  • Experience developing specifications, plans and other construction documents.
  • Broad experience with civil design infrastructure such as storm sewer, sanitary sewer, water mains supporting facilities.
  • Knowledgeable in ADA
  • Experience with landscape design
  • Experience with site development and planning
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Able to think critically and make decisions requiring engineering judgment.

Facilities Design and Engineering, designs for campus development, and provides engineering support in all disciplines, including energy management for Sandia National Laboratories. By effectively providing all design and engineering services, we deliver a sustainable campus that protects the workforce, stimulates employees, fosters interaction and creative solutions. The in-house studio is aligned to partner customer needs to design projects that proactively support the customer and the corporation.

The primary focus of the group is to work on low risk and low complexity projects with a value of $1K-$500k to enable current-day and future mission success through collaboration. Posting Duration

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs
