Description

The Department of African and African Diaspora Studies at The University of Texas at Austin invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor to begin in the Fall of the academic year 2026-27. We seek an exceptional scholar whose work centers on digital and/or emerging technologies and Africa, with a preference for West or Southern Africa.

We welcome candidates who integrate applied or experimental digital technologies into their research and teaching, as well as those who critically investigate the social, cultural, and ethical dimensions of those technologies.

Areas of interest may include, but are not limited to:

* Artificial intelligence and machine learning;

* GIS, mapping, and other geospatial analysis and visualization techniques;

* Extended and immersive reality (VR/AR/XR);

* Civic and urban technology'

* Technology and the environment; and

* Cultural analytics, digital archives, and archival studies

The search is open to candidates with training in a broad array of disciplines. These include but are not limited to: Black Studies, any of the Humanities (e.g. History, Rhetoric, Literature, Cultural Studies), Anthropology, Geography, Information Sciences, Environmental Studies, Law, Health, Social Work, Communications, Architecture, Public Affairs, Computer Sciences, Urban Studies and or Planning, and Fine Arts.

The successful candidate will be committed to developing innovative undergraduate and graduate courses and programs in African and African Diaspora Studies, as well as contributing to the growth of the department's digital and technological initiatives.

Qualifications

Applicants must have completed all the requirements for the Ph.D. by the time of appointment or expect to obtain the Ph.D. within a year of joining the faculty as an Instructor.

Applicants must upload a cover letter, a list of at least three references, a sample of scholarly writing (30 pages maximum length), and a curriculum vitae.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experien e and qualifications. Position funding is subject to budget availability.
