Position description

Research 90%

This position will be involved in interdisciplinary studies and preforming experiments focusing on questions in molecular and cellular biology and neurobiology. Junior Specialists are required to be actively and significantly involved in publishable research activities, including reviewing journal articles and engaging in discussions on research and the interpretation of research results. Jr. Specialists should also participate in one or more of the following activities: appropriate professional/technical societies or groups and other educational and research organizations; and review research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications related to area of expertise. Candidates are responsible for basic lab operations and maintenance, including one or more of the following:

* Basic laboratory/research support: Under the direction of the lab manager, ensuring lab equipment is maintained in good working order, cleaning/preparation of glassware and other lab ware, preparation of reagents, maintaining stocks of lab consumables, tracking relevant documentation for lab records (invoices, records, etc.), daily housekeeping, preparation and distribution of enrichment for research subjects, etc.

* Safety/Protocol documentation: Must have documentation of all required training pertaining to working in lab. Ensures no procedures or processes will be performed if not trained. Training and documentation is required to be completed in a timely matter. This includes IACUC, BUA and EHS safety and regulation requirements.* Research: performing experiments/interpreting results under direction of PI and senior lab members

* Other: additional tasks as needed to support PI and group members, such as lab website maintenance, transport of materials/reagents/samples to/from collaborators, scheduling/organization of lab activities, animal handling/care.

PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE. 5%

The incumbent may have the opportunity to submit data for presentation relevant conferences, such as Society for Neuroscience (if funding is available).

o Actively participate in weekly lab meetings, journal club presentations, presentations from outside speakers, and weekly workshops to help incumbents develop their academic/career goals.

o Participate in appropriate professional/technical societies or groups and/or review research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications related to area of expertise.

UNIVERSITY SERVICE 5%

o The incumbent will mentor undergraduate student assistants in the lab.

o The incumbent will participate in public outreach activities.


Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

*BS/BA in Neuroscience, Psychology, Animal Science, Biology or related field.

*The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills

*The ability to work well independently and as part of a team.

*Experience with animal handling

*Strong time management skills

*Excellent attention to detail and ability to maintain detailed and accurate records

*Superior problem solving, deductive reasoning, and decision-making skills

*Ability to commit to lengthy, complex projects

Preferred qualifications (other preferred, but not required, qualifications for the position)

*Previous lab experience (with references) preferred.
