Responsible for obtaining trans-thoracic echocardiograms including real time, pulsed Doppler, continuous wave Doppler, color Doppler and fetal echoes (when applicable) in the pediatric population. Compiles data required by the pediatric cardiologist on all studies. Responsible for doing all other duties that may be assigned at the discretion of the manager and/or the Medical Director in addition to proper billing of the procedures and prioritizing patient scheduling.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) OR Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) through Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI).

2. Pediatric Echocardiography (PE) through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) OR Fetal Echocardiography (FE) through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) within 24 months of hire.

3. Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. They are not intended to be constructed as an all-inclusive list of all responsibilities and duties. Other duties may be assigned.

1. Demonstrates competencies defined in Registered Pediatric Cardiac Sonographer "Principal Duties and Responsibilities" in providing age- appropriate care to patients from the age of birth through 21 years, and select adult patients

2. Performs trans-thoracic echocardiograms and fetal echocardiograms (when applicable) according to the requirements set by the CVIS Lab protocols.

3. Demonstrates an understanding of congenital heart defects and the surgical repairs allowing them to obtain quality images for the Cardiologist who is interpreting the study.

4. Responsible for entering correct patient demographics, caregivers and study information.

5. Maintains necessary supplies and linen in the echo room assigned for the week. Responsible for maintaining cleanliness of echo room, machines ,TEE probes, and office clean.

6. Participates in research projects as requested.

7. Attends and participates in the monthly pediatric QA conference, the monthly departmental staff meetings.

8. Assists Technical Manager and Medical Director in evaluation of new equipment and Sonographers.

9. Provides an Echocardiography orientation to Cardiology Fellows, Residents, Medical Students and Sonography students if requested.

10. Responsible for making a service call to Biomed when there is an equipment failure.

11. Participates in department QI initiatives and education for JACHO and EOC rounds.

To apply for the next level, the Pediatric Cardiac Sonographer must meet the requirements of their current level. They must also meet the required years of experience, degree, and certification to apply for the next level.

Level 1

  • No experience required.

  • All Pediatric Cardiac Sonographers with less than 12 months of experienceenter at Level one.

Level 2

  • Meets requirements for previous level.

  • One year of pediatric cardiac sonographer experience.

  • Complete competency of Skill Set Tech 1, plus additional skill sets.

Level 3

  • Meets requirements for previous levels.

  • One continuing education pathway.

  • Three years of pediatric cardiac sonographer experience.

  • Compliant in 3 leadership/supervisory skills.

  • Complete competency of Skill Set Tech 1 and 2, plus 3 additional skill sets.

Level 4

  • Meets requirements for previous levels.

  • One continuing education pathway.

  • Five years of pediatric cardiac sonographer experience.

  • Compliant in 5 leadership/supervisory skills.

  • Complete competency of Skill Set Tech 1, 2, and 3 plus 4 additional skill sets.
