The Research Associate will participate in research designed to evaluate the financial and social costs of not replacing dental amalgams with materials that do not contain the toxic metal mercury. Specifically this person will employ data from the CDC's biennial National Health and Nutrition Evaluation Survey ( NHANES) and similar datasets from Europe and South Korea to assess the association of Hg exposure from amalgams with chronic inflammation as measured by the C-reactive protein ( CRP) and leukocyte ratios, and possible exacerbation of chronic inflammation when coupled with smoking tobacco and/or consuming alcohol.

DATA ANALYSES: Application of appropriate statistics to discern relationships among data types and choice of appropriate statistics to establish the significance of diverse forms of co-occurrence.

DATA ACQUISITION: For this bioinformatic research project this means to identify relevant datasets/databases; collate diverse datasets; reorder diverse datasets for application of various types of statistical and other mathematical analyses.

INTERPRETATION: Relating the output of each analysis to the appropriate larger field(s) of knowledge and relating significant positive or negative findings to pre-existing models of processes underlying one's findings, considering both similarities and differences with current relevant models of objects and processes under consideration.

PREPARING AND SUBMITTING A MANUSCRIPT FOR PEER REVIEW: 1. Pre-review by co-authors and other knowledgeable colleagues in related and unrelated disciplines ("friendly fire" ). 2. Finalize the manuscript with their suggested revisions of text, data tables and figures, citations and bibliography, and supporting material. 3. Submit to the appropriate journal in its required formats for text and data etc. 4. Make final revisions after anonymous peer reviews and the editor's decision. 5. Carefully read and edit the galley proof of the article in printed journal format.

EXTRAPOLATION: Formulate testable hypotheses for the significant processes to be expected (or not) if the inferred causes of these processes are correct and what might be the outcome of perturbations (positive or negative) of these processes by specific realistic extraneous forces.
