Job Summary:
The Arlington Beef Research Facilities are part of the Integrated Cattle Operations within the Agricultural Research Stations. These industry leading facilities are located on the Arlington Ag Research Station just 20 miles north of the UW-Madison campus. Our newly renovated beef grazing facility is now outfitted to host state of the art neonatal calf research with individual pens and automated feeding systems. In addition these facilities support a structure for various research designs including both group housed and individually housed growing animals that partake in research extending from nutrition to reproduction and beyond. This position will be involved in all aspects of these cattle research operations, including but not limited to feeding, cleaning, animal handling, animal health observations, research data collection, and neonatal calf care. This position must function with close, progressing to limited supervision. The incumbent in this position must work with limited supervision to record, collect, and process research data and samples according to established standard operating procedures. Key Job Responsibilities:
ARS - Arlington Beef Grazing Facility (Arlington, Wisconsin) Compensation:The minimum salary for this position is $20.00 per hour. Final salary will depend on experience and qualifications. Schedule: This position is a part-time role with flexible scheduling options based on individual need and operation demands. Both morning and afternoon shifts are available, with shifts ranging from 4-8 hours in length as desired by chosen candidate. An expected work schedule with a minimum of 8-20 hours per week will include a rotating every other weekend requirement. Required Qualifications:-All necessary skills and knowledge will be taught during the first year on the job -A positive attitude and commitment to learning about the care of growing cattle and neonatal calves -Willingness to work hard and contribute positively to the work team -Skills in communicating with fellow co-workers, the management team, faculty, and visitors in a professional manner Preferred Qualifications:-Cattle handling and restraining techniques -Basic techniques and principles involved in routine calf care and caring for growing cattle -Ability to accurately collect and record experimental samples and measurements -Familiarity and ability to recognize the difference between normal and abnormal appearances and behavior in cattle at various ages -Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to farm equipment utilized routinely -Skills in operating equipment related to farm work, or a willingness to learn them -Ability to interpret, understand, and follow both written and oral instructions pertaining to research and the management protocols of the facility -Knowledge of the nutrient requirements of growing cattle and neo-natal calves -Skills in animal care procedures and techniques such as administration of various animal health related drugs, and neo-natal calf care -Ability to work with others, along with the capacity to interact with students, faculty, and the public in a professional manner Education:H.S.
