Essential Job Duties

As a Renovation Technician Assistant, you'll play a hands-on role in supporting our Construction Shop by working alongside experienced carpentry, electrical, HVAC, and plumbing technicians.
In this role, you'll contribute to campus renovation projects, assist with equipment installation, and help ensure every project meets specifications, quality standards, and safety requirements. Key responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Service sinks, water supplies, medical gases, plumbing fixtures, water heaters, A/C units, terminal units, and ductwork
  • Assist in installing metal-framed walls, door and window frames, sheetrock, finishing walls, and acoustical ceiling systems
  • Assist with institutional electrical wiring, retrofitting light fixtures, and installing/removing outlets, switches, and conduit runs
  • Assist with trim work, wall removal, partition installation, and room alterations using hand and power tools
  • Utilize knowledge of all equipment commonly associated with a renovation shop, including power tools, hand tools, electrical meters, and other measuring devices
  • Read blueprints, schematics, technical specifications, and manuals
  • Coordinate with coworkers on the assigned project to prevent overlap and timeline concerns, liaise with building contacts for access, and coordinate with the zone shop for system shutdowns
  • Performs all work within State, Local, and University codes and understands safety guidelines and procedures

Other Responsibilities

  • Performs contributing level multi trades in the Construction shop
  • Knowledgeable of remodeling trades (carpentry, electrical, HVAC, plumbing), practices, procedures, techniques, tools and equipment. Understands materials, specifications, quality control, cost control, and safety
  • Assists other trades as required

Qualifications






Minimum Experience/Education
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s).

Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience and knowledge of commercial carpentry, electrical, plumbing and HVAC
  • Must be able to communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters
  • Experience in carpentry and electrical trade
  • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds frequently and up to 60 pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodations

Required License or Certification

  • Must have a valid driver's license
  • Must be able to obtain a valid NC driver's license within 60 days of hire and must be maintained
