Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Laboratory Analytical Chemistry Technician III at UL Research Institutes, based in our Research Triangle Park, NC facilities.

The Laboratory Analytical Chemistry Technician III assists in conducting laboratory analytical chemistry measurements to support CIRI's mission of advancing human and environmental health. This role supports the generation of targeted and non-targeted analytical chemistry data by performing laboratory experiments, generation, analysis, and interpretation of experimental data, operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment, and preparation of data summaries and written reports. Works under the supervision of other research scientists to ensure that all laboratory experiments and measurements are accurate and technically sound.

What you'll learn and achieve:

As the Laboratory Analytical Chemistry Technician III , you will play a key role in the rapid growth of UL as you:

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the laboratory, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and established protocols.

  • Maintain laboratory inventory, order and stock supplies, track usage, and ensure adequate availability of materials needed for experiments.

  • Oversee and operate advanced laboratory instrumentation, including liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) for both targeted and non-targeted analyses, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy for assessing chemical library constituents, purity, and concentration.

  • Calibrate instruments, troubleshoot technical issues, and perform routine maintenance to ensure accurate and reliable results.

  • Collaborate with research staff to plan, design, and execute bench-scale and small- to medium-scale experiments.

  • Maintain accurate records of experiments, procedures, and laboratory activities in accordance with quality and regulatory requirements.

  • Troubleshoot experimental and equipment-related issues, ensuring timely resolution.

  • Ensure laboratory safety and follow established safety protocols, maintain a clean and organized work environment, handle hazardous substances appropriately, and dispose of waste materials safely.

  • Supervise laboratory technician staff as assigned, providing technical guidance and leadership.

  • Support interdisciplinary projects through collaboration with research staff and other departments.

  • Engage in continuous learning and professional development activities, attend workshops, seminars, or training sessions to enhance knowledge and skills.

  • Perform other duties as directed.

While no one candidate will embody every quality, the successful candidate will bring many of the following professional competencies and personal attributes:

  • Strong technical expertise in analytical chemistry instrumentation, specifically liquid chromatography techniques, mass spectrometry, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

  • Proficiency in sample preparation and the operation, calibration, and maintenance of NMR.

  • Familiarity with specific extraction techniques including solid phase extraction, QuEChERS, and solvent extractions.

  • Knowledge of targeted and non-targeted applications of LC-MS.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills to manage multiple priorities.

  • Desire to collaborate with a team of chemists, toxicologists, and informaticians.

  • Knowledge of safety protocols, laboratory best practices, and regulatory compliance requirements.

  • Analytical and problem-solving abilities with attention to detail and ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.

Professional education and experience requirements for the role include:

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry or related field and minimum 4 years of directly related work experience.

  • Experience with wet chemistry techniques for sample preparation. PFAS-specific sample preparation experience a plus.

  • Experience in operation, calibration, and maintenance of NMR and LC-MS Q-TOF and QQQ.

  • Experience with NMR data acquisition software, spectral interpretation for structural elucidation, and quantitative NMR for purity and/or concentration determination.
