Job Summary

Responsible for a full range of horticultural tasks for the Getty Center and Getty Villa. Maintains horticulture management guidelines for Getty landscapes and implements fine horticultural techniques to increase landscape aesthetics. Engages with colleagues at all levels of the organization and provides expert guidance in maintenance and management of all Getty landscapes and gardens.



Major Job Responsibilities

    Under moderate supervision develops and maintains Robert Irwin's Central Garden and other Getty gardens and landscapes.
  • Acts as expert in acquisitions, maintenance, and management of landscaping materials in collaboration with colleagues.
  • Continually augments knowledge about the Getty's gardens.
  • Works with colleagues to broaden expertise
  • Applies advanced knowledge of horticulture and design to the Getty's gardens and landscapes.
  • Develops partnerships with suppliers and other peer institutions.
  • Assists with the assessment of conservation needs
  • Spearheads data collection and maintains a database of plant material to include: maps, plant locations, and care requirements.
  • Maintains horticulture management guidelines for Robert Irwin Central Garden, Villa Herb Garden, Olin landscapes, outdoor sculpture gardens, and all other gardens, landscapes, and natural areas at all Getty locations.
  • Conducts and collaborates in research to identify plants that fit within the design context of the Central Garden and present ideas and recommendations to the Steering Committee.
  • Works with all levels of the Grounds Department staff to maintain gardens and landscapes.
  • Acts as lead project manager for a wide range of complex projects, including Getty gardens and landscape
  • May provide technical direction and subject matter expertise.


Qualifications

  • BS in Horticulture or related field or a combination of education and relevant experience
  • 4+ years' experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in horticultural design.
  • Strong knowledge of and previous work experience in the care and presentation of a diverse collection of plant materials.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • Some proficiency in Spanish preferred.

  • Ability to problem solve a wide range of complex horticultural/landscape issues.
  • Must be willing to travel.
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships, collaborate, and direct tasks with teams across disciplines.
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather, including cold, rain and heat.
  • Ability to communicate and distill information for a specialized audience as well as the general public.
  • Ability to adapt written material for a variety of audiences online or in print.
  • Ability to research and write on relevant topics.
