We are looking for an EHS Environmental Manager who will be responsible for establishing, managing, and continuously improving the environmental compliance and sustainability programs for the GMS Rockville site. The right candidate will have broad knowledge of EHS programs and EHS specialty areas including environmental engineering and risk management. As the EHS Manager, you will provide guidance in managing environmental and waste management outside services.

The EHS Environmental Manager is also responsible for advising the site leadership team on processes to improve EHS management and performance and responsible for driving continuous improvement in site environmental performance and will serve as a site contact with regulatory agencies (e.g., OSHA, EPA, DOT etc.) and with GSK Corporate EHS Department. You will provide guidance in managing budgets to support outside services and operating expenses. The role includes strategic EHS planning as well as a tactical role for site wide EHS management systems, Environmental regulations, and industry best practices.

  • Develop and implement environmental strategies and action plans to support and align to GSK environmental and sustainability goals.
  • Coordinate all aspects of pollution control, waste management, recycling, environmental health, conservation.
  • Lead the implementation of environmental procedures and practices.
  • Perform applications for environmental permits and maintenance of existing permits.
  • On rotation for Standby/On Call for 7 days at a time Monday-Monday, rotates within members of the EHS team. Provide general EHS advice to a dedicated functional group.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental legislation and keep up to date with Federal, State and local regulation and legislation. Liaise with relevant regulatory agency authorities.
  • Audit, analyze and report environmental performance to internal and external regulatory agencies.
  • Carry out impact assessments to identify, assess and reduce environmental risks and financial costs.
  • Promote and raise awareness of the impact of emerging environmental issues.
  • Develop and implement environmental management systems to continually improve. Provide training at all levels on environmental issues and responsibilities.
  • Coordinate environmental sampling, testing and review of results, and write environmental reports.
  • Participate in setting sustainability targets, developing plans to meet those targets.
  • Respond and investigate environmental adverse events such as spills and environmental releases, non-injury accidents and near misses to ensure root causes are identified and CAPAs are addressed.
  • Provide timely, high quality EHS technical support. Develop and conduct EHS training.
  • Participate or conduct internal audit program to assess compliance with external and internal requirements.
  • Conduct environmental impact assessments to identify the site's key environmental priorities.
  • Review change proposals to identify potential EHS issues and participate in their resolution.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues at Rockville, other GSK sites to ensure that EHS best practices and lessons from adverse events are shared effectively.
  • Ensure that necessary EHS information is reported to the management and to local regulators and to stakeholders within GSK.

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • Minimum bachelor's degree in a Science, Environmental, Science, Engineering, or EHS discipline with a minimum of 4 years' experience in environmental management or consulting, or EHS program development and implementation, preferably in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry.

Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • Professional certification (e.g., PE, CHMM, CIH, CSP) is preferred.
  • Thorough understanding of key regulatory requirements (eg OSHA, NIOSH, ANSI, NFPA, and EPA rules and regulations) and their application to a manufacturing and laboratory environment, particularly in the following key areas: Environment, eg waste management, air emissions, wastewater treatment, energy efficiency, and sustainability.
  • Experience with EHS management systems.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Excellent computer skills primarily with Microsoft Office Suite and Project
  • Highly effective written, oral and presentation skills
  • Ability to prioritize multiple demands, think strategically and successfully lead multiple simultaneous projects.

The annual base salary for new hires in this position ranges from $100,650 to $167,750 taking into account a number of factors including work location within the US market, the candidate's skills, experience, education level and the market rate for the role. In addition, this position offers an annual bonus and eligibility to participate in our share based long term incentive program which is dependent on the level of the role. Available benefits include health care and other insurance benefits (for employee and family), retirement benefits, paid holidays, vacation, and paid caregiver/parental and medical leave.
