The Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Research Center was established to expand basic, translational, and clinical research of cardiovascular diseases. Cardiovascular diseases, including congestive heart failure, hypertension, atherosclerosis, stroke, aneurysms, and vascular auto-immune diseases are the most common cause of death and disability in the United States, and account for approximately 30% of deaths and health care costs annually in this country and developed societies. The mission of the Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Research Center is to support interdisciplinary research in basic, translational and clinical cardiovascular sciences, including cardiovascular development, function, pathophysiology, pharmacology, genetics, genomics, and proteomics, and to apply this knowledge to better understand the causes of cardiovascular diseases and to pioneer development of new innovative therapies and approaches to prevent or treat them. Position Summary The Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Research Center (CVRC) at the University of Virginia School of Medicine is seeking a Laboratory Specialist (Intermediate or Senior) to join the Khetarpal Lab. We study how the heart communicates with other organs to regulate energy balance, uncovering secreted proteins and lipid pathways that may become new therapies for heart failure and cardiometabolic disease. Our team uses mouse models of exercise and heart failure, viral gene delivery, proteomics, lipidomics, mitochondrial physiology, and primary cell culture. This position offers the chance to contribute to impactful discoveries at the intersection of metabolism, exercise biology, and cardiovascular disease. Responsibilities The candidate should be highly motivated to learn new techniques and should have good communication skills. Experience in animal handling, small tissue dissection, cell culture, molecular biology is highly desirable. The candidate will be expected to manage laboratory purchases, setups, protocols, and mouse colonies and perform molecular biology and functional experiments in mice and/or cell models. Salary will be commensurate with experience. Minimum Qualifications Lab Specialist Intermediate Education: Bachelor's degree. Experience: 4 years of experience. Master's degree may substitute for required experience. 8 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree. Lab Specialist Senior Education: Bachelor's degree. Experience: 6 years of experience. 10 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree or Master's degree plus 4 years lab-related experience. Physical Demands This position can involve extensive periods of standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. It also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation. Position Type & Work Location
