Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Laboratory Researcher IV for the School of Engineering. The position reports directly to the Project Engineer II within the Rutgers University Asphalt/Pavement Laboratory (
RAPL) under the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Rutgers University.
Among the key duties of the position are the following
- Performs professional entry level research experiments and research using various asphalt and pavement evaluation-based techniques.
- Carries out routine and non-routine work with review of work outputs by the Laboratory Supervisor.
- Maintains and keeps the work place (laboratory) organized, clean, and calibrated.
- Trains and leads students and lower level technicians through various established testing procedures.
- Completes work under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor, with specific instructions on routine and semi-routine work and/or within established work parameters.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
- Bachelors Degree in a scientific field or an equivalent combination of education and/or relevant research and hot mix asphalt materials experience.

Certifications/Licenses |
- Level 1 and Level 2 New Jersey Society of Asphalt Technologists (NJSAT) certification in Hot Mix Asphalt Design and Hot Mix Asphalt Plant Technician.
- A valid driver's license would be required for this position.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities |
- Computer literacy, especially Microsoft Excel and Word.
- Mechanically knowledgeable.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Certifications in other types of hot mix asphalt design.
- Experience working in a university laboratory/field research setting related to civil engineering.
- Familiarity with roadway design and construction practices.

Equipment Utilized |
Equipment:
- Servo-pneumatic test systems: In particular, a piece of test equipment called the Asphalt Pavement Analyzer.
- Gyratory compactors, vibratory compactors, and impact hammer compactors which are commonly used in the asphalt industry for design and preparation of performance testing.
NCAT Ignition Ovens used for the determination of a paving mixtures asphalt content.
Software:
- PinePave: An Excel based design program used for the design and aggregate blending of materials used to design Hot Mix Asphalt.
- Excel: A basic knowledge of the use of Excel is mandatory. This software is not only used for design purposes, but is also used for many of the mathematical computations, statistical analysis, and empirical modeling required in the position.
- Word: A basic knowledge of the use of Word (or any equivalent word processing software) is
mandatory. Due to the research nature of the work, any relevant findings from the research will be organized and sent out to peer review publications. Therefore, both report writing and journal publications will be constructed.
Materials:
- Hot Mix Asphalt: This encompasses the aggregates (stone and sand), as well as liquid asphalt binder.
- Soils and Aggregates: This encompasses raw materials in the laboratory, as well as materials being sampled from the field to be analyzed in the lab.
