Position Highlights

The HVAC/Refrigeration Mechanic, reporting to Shop Supervisor, installs, repairs, overhauls, and maintains heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) or refrigeration systems, including performing complex and precision work related to hydronic piping systems for university housing facilities. This person performs welding techniques in the design, layout, fabrication joining, and repair of piping, consistent with pipefitter level skills; maintains and repairs boilers, chilled water system components and related equipment in university dorms and apartments; and performs other tasks which, combined, comprise of a preventive maintenance program for Housing Facilities.

This position requires driving University vehicles or golf carts.

Duties & Responsibilities

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Installs,
    maintains, and repairs boilers and related equipment, e.g., piping, heat
    exchangers (steam and electric feed) and control valves.
  • Installs,
    maintains, and repairs chilled water related equipment, e.g., water pumps,
    valves, regulators, check valves, electric and pneumatic controls, gear
    boxes, and related energy management equipment.
  • Installs,
    maintains, and repairs HVAC related equipment, e.g., tanks, pumps, timers,
    valves, regulators, electric and pneumatic controls.
  • Installs,
    maintains, and repairs air handlers and related equipment, e.g., air
    supply/return/ exhaust motors, fans, and vents.
  • Inspects,
    evaluates, maintains, and repairs fire extinguishing systems, including
    standard testing of related building fire safety equipment.
  • Inspects,
    evaluates, maintains, and repairs generators and related equipment.
  • Maintains
    and repairs circulating pumps and related equipment for domestic water
    systems.
  • Participates
    in Housing Emergency On-Call Program.
  • Works
    with department supervisors and staff in maintaining established
    preventative maintenance programs for all housing facilities.
  • Performs
    facility inspections, documents work request activity and related
    requirements.
  • Maintains
    assigned shop inventory, tools, and equipment.
  • Assists
    with various departmental activities during August student Move-in
    process.
  • Performs
    related duties as assigned or required to meet Housing & Residential
    Life goals and objectives.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge
    of HVAC or refrigeration tools, equipment, and materials common to the
    trade.
  • Knowledge
    of repair, maintenance, and installation techniques.
  • Knowledge
    of all applicable codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Skill
    in reading and understanding schematics.
  • Skill
    in analyzing HVAC or refrigeration malfunctions from performance and
    testing equipment readings and determining appropriate repairs.
  • Skill
    in installation, repair and maintenance of all systems and assignments
    common to the trade.
  • Skill
    in estimating time and material requirements for work projects.
  • Ability
    to effectively communicate.

SUPPLEMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Housing
    & Residential Life is a security sensitive department, and this
    position requires a fingerprint criminal background check.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Completion of a high school education or high school diploma
    equivalency is required.
  • Journeyman level position/ Apprenticeship program, technical
    training experience required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Six years of progressively responsible HVAC or refrigeration equipment installation, maintenance and repair experience.

  • OR
  • Completion of a four year federally approved technical training program in the installation, repair and maintenance of HVAC or refrigeration equipment.

  • OR
  • Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education approved by Human Resources.
  • Chlorofluorocarbons Certification.
