JOB PURPOSE:

The Porter is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly environment within the shelter facility. This role includes custodial duties, basic maintenance, and support for day-to-day facility operations. The Porter helps ensure that the shelter remains a welcoming, dignified space for residents and staff by upholding high standards of cleanliness and safety.


Qualifications

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:





  • Perform daily cleaning of common areas, restrooms, offices, and resident spaces as assigned.
  • Collect and dispose of trash, recycling, and biohazard waste following safety procedures.
  • Replenish supplies such as soap, paper products, and cleaning items.
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, and sanitize floors and surfaces.
  • Conduct basic maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs, unclogging drains, or repairing minor fixtures.
  • Picking up litter and debris around the facility exterior.
  • Report facility damage, safety hazards, and repair needs to the Facilities Manager or Shelter Manager.
  • Assist with set-up and breakdown of furniture, equipment, and supplies for shelter activities or emergencies.
  • Support pest control and sanitation efforts to maintain a healthy environment.
  • Follow OSHA and shelter safety guidelines for cleaning, chemical use, and equipment handling.
  • Maintain safe storage of cleaning and maintenance supplies.
  • Assist in emergency preparedness tasks, such as clearing exits and ensuring safety equipment is accessible.
  • Interact respectfully with residents, modeling professionalism and compassion.
  • Assist staff with facility-related requests to support shelter operations.
  • Respond to urgent custodial or maintenance needs promptly.
  • Demonstrate safe work habits and observe all applicable worker safety practices, including the use of required personal protective equipment.
  • Operate motorized equipment used for cleaning.
  • Perform laundry services to ensure sanitation and cleanliness of shelter operations.
  • Maintain a variety of records as required, such as inventory, checklists, and cleaning inspections.
  • Other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED required.

EXPERIENCE: 4 months to 1 year of experience as a custodial/housekeeper/porter. Prior custodial, janitorial, or maintenance experience strongly preferred.

ATTENDANCE: Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such level as is determined in the employer's sole discretion.

LICENSES: Driver's License with clear record.

VEHICLE: Must have daily use of a vehicle without prior notice.

WORK LOCATION: In Person

OTHER: Must be available and willing to travel to various locations and with such frequency as the business need dictates. Must not pose a direct threat or significant risk of substantial harm to the safety or health of himself/herself or others. Must be 21 years or older.Eligible to receive, pass, and maintain security investigation background checks - initiated by the National Background Investigations Bureau. Must be a U.S. citizen or a Lawful Permanent Resident.Pass a criminal history screen, including state and local child protection agency registries;Ability to work independently and exercise a high level of confidentiality
