Based out of Charlotte (alternative locations available in the Carolinas West region)

Distribution Protection, Automation & Control engineer within the Asset Management organization. The Engineer II position is the intermediate level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer III position solve more complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with general supervision. An Engineer II is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer II effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is fairly complex and varied.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Performing recloser and circuit breaker coordination studies.

  • Remotely adjusting settings files to accommodate system changes.

  • Helping evaluate and implement new protection technologies.

  • Support with technical feedback on outage follow-up efforts by reviewing event records to improve reliability.

  • Support automation enablement through creation of Oneline drawings and backfeed contingency coordination studies.

  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.

  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally

Basic/Required Qualifications

Note: Dependent on relevant experience, the level to which a candidate is aligned is outlined below.

Engineer II

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.

  • Minimum of 2 years engineering.

Engineer III

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.

  • Minimum of 4 years engineering experience.

Desired Qualifications

  • Electrical Engineering degree preferred - the concepts of protection and control require an understanding of symmetrical components and energy flow calculations.

  • In lieu of the EE degree a demonstrated knowledge in power system analysis including modeling, fault study, and protection coordination.

  • Experience in the use of the CYME or similar circuit analysis tool.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.

  • Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.

  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.

  • Understanding of basic principles of project management.

  • Experience in the utility industry.

  • Department specific experience applicable to the hiring department, including familiarity with Cyme circuit modeling software.

Working Conditions

  • Hybrid Mobility Classification - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility.

  • Travel 5-15 %, mostly local or day trips including routine visits to the field for detailed studies and troubleshooting

  • Availability for storm response

Specific Requirements

  • Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
