Tools Design Engineer

STS Technical Services is hiring a Tools Design Engineer in Greensboro, North Carolina. This role is responsible for designing and developing production tooling to support aircraft manufacturing, ensuring each solution meets stringent engineering and manufacturing standards. The position offers an opportunity to collaborate with cross-functional teams and external suppliers to deliver tooling solutions that are safe, efficient, and optimized for performance.


Position Summary

The Tools Design Engineer will review tooling requests, develop 3D models and 2D drawings, and lead tooling design reviews to ensure compliance with engineering and manufacturing requirements. This role requires experience in aircraft tooling design, proficiency in CATIA, and a strong knowledge of GD&T principles.


Key Responsibilities

  • Review tooling requests, engineering models, and drawings to create new or modified tooling designs
  • Develop innovative tooling concepts to support new engineering developments
  • Produce 3D models and 2D drawings to design production tooling in line with program requirements
  • Create tooling usage guidelines to ensure functionality and compliance
  • Conduct peer reviews and design checks to validate tooling accuracy and functionality
  • Coordinate internal and external design reviews across engineering and manufacturing teams
  • Recommend improvements to tooling design processes, procedures, and philosophies

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in a technical field required; Bachelor's degree preferred
  • 5+ years of experience in aircraft tooling design (automotive tooling design may be considered)
  • Proficiency in CATIA V5 required
  • Knowledge of ASME Y14.5 GD&T; ASME GDTP certification preferred
  • Machining, fabrication, and/or CNC programming experience a plus
  • Teamcenter PLM experience a plus

Skills & Abilities

  • Strong understanding of aircraft manufacturing processes
  • Ability to coordinate cross-functional design reviews
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and organizational skills
  • Proactive mindset with a focus on continuous improvement

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in environments with equipment operational noise, dust, or fuel odors
  • Ability to stand, sit, squat, walk, bend, move, reach, or stretch for extended periods
  • Must be able to lift or move up to 25 lbs. unassisted
  • Adherence to all safety standards and regulatory requirements (FAA, OSHA, DOT, EPA, state, and federal)
