Overview:

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory has an opening for a Rigger/Iron Worker. In this role you will, under limited supervision, perform a variety of rigging and iron working tasks. You will be responsible for selecting appropriate rigging, forklifts, cranes or other load handling equipment for lifting and transporting materials throughout ORNL in a safe and efficient manner. This position requires work in environments that may include elevated work, exposure to weather conditions, confined spaces, and areas that require a respirator.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Moving, transporting, positioning, pulling and securing heavy equipment, machines and oversized loads
  • Signaling or verbally directing coworkers while engaged in hoisting and rigging to ensure safety of workers and materials
  • Setup and removal of various equipment
  • Inspecting and testing rigging to ensure safety and reliability
  • Attaching loads to rigging to provide support or prepare them for moving
  • Selecting appropriate equipment according to load weights, sizes and facilities
  • Controlling movement of heavy equipment through narrow openings or confined spaces
  • Perform bull rigging activities, including use of chain hoists, rollers, jacks, and other specialized equipment for controlled moves.
  • Loading and transporting rigging equipment for offsite work
  • Other tasks as assigned by management

Basic Qualifications:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent
  • The completion of a three-year apprenticeship program with five years of journeyman rigger experience or 10 years combined documented experience in the rigging industry.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Possess the ability to work collaboratively with supervisors, operators, and other team members in the field.
  • Extensive knowledge of various sling types, rigging hardware and rigging inspection criteria as well as load ratings and angular deductions for rigging being used.
  • An understanding of general industry standards such as OSHA, ASME and ANSI.
  • Ability to perform and comprehend mathematical functions such as geometry and trigonometry as it pertains to skilled fabrication and advanced rigging applications.
  • Experience and knowledge in safe operations of fabrication equipment such as drill presses, punches, sheers, band saws and similar equipment.
  • Ability to plan and execute the use of chain hoists, skates, rollers, and similar devices to safely drift suspended loads, skid or skate loads horizontally, and design winch-and-block systems to support these operations.
  • Experience in general fabrication of steel structures including but not limited to reading and comprehension of blueprints, measuring and cutting of stock materials, building stair stringers and platforms and installation of these structures.
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail and thoroughly complete work tasks.
  • Ability to maintain composure and keep emotions in check in all situations.

Special Requirements:

  • Physical Requirements:Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
  • Visa Sponsorship: Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • HSPD-12 PIV badge: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge
  • Q or L clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
