General Description

The Peabody Preparatory is pleased to announce an Adjunct Contemporary Dance teaching position in the Dance Department at the Peabody Preparatory, a division of the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD, commencing September 2025.

The successful candidate will have experience teaching contemporary dance techniques to students of all levels (beginner to advanced) ages 7-18. This position may be assigned specialized classes in contemporary dance repertory and/or composition classes. Therefore, preference will be given to candidates with a record of accomplishment in choreography and professional performance experience and those with experience in mentoring student choreographers. The successful candidate will teach the principles of contemporary Dance from an anatomical perspective, nurture enthusiasm for contemporary dance training among all students and create an inclusive, welcoming, and safe learning environment for students of all abilities. The successful candidate will work with students to develop self-discipline and mutual respect for their classmates; provide individual feedback and encouragement to improve contemporary dance technique; engage students in the creative process; and provide the Department Chair updates on student progress so the Dance Department can work collectively to facilitate continued progress.

Duties:

Teaching up to 9.5 hours of beginning, intermediate, or advanced contemporary dance classes at Peabody Preparatory's Downtown or Towson campuses. Classes may be scheduled between 4:00 pm-9:00 pm Monday - Friday or between the hours of 9:00 am - 4:00 pm on Saturday. Classes will meet for 32 weeks during the Preparatory school year from September - to May. This teacher may also set and/or create choreography for the Dance Department's year-end performances in May. Although most performance preparation takes place during regular class times, performance responsibilities may include additional rehearsals at the end of the spring semester.

Located in the heart of Baltimore's Mount Vernon Cultural District, the Peabody Institute was founded in 1857 as America's first academy of music. Through its degree-granting Conservatory and its community-based Preparatory music and Dance school, Peabody trains musicians and dancers of every age and level.

The Peabody Preparatory shares space with the Peabody Conservatory in downtown Baltimore, and has four satellite branches in the communities of Towson, Frederick, Annapolis and Howard County, MD. The Preparatory has approximately 2,000 students studying all orchestral instruments, guitar, piano, voice, Dance, theory, composition, early childhood, orchestra, chamber music and more.

The Preparator's dance department, established in 1914, is one of the oldest-continuously operating dance training centers in the United States. Preparatory Dance has pioneered new dance forms throughout its remarkable life span, mounted numerous collaborative projects, partnered with prominent figures in 20th and 21st century American dance, and produced accomplished professional dancers, choreographers, directors, and teachers. Preparatory Dance is keeping in step with the progression of American Dance into the 21st century and remains committed to: offering high-quality dance training for students of all levels age 3 to adult; presenting imaginative professional-level performances; offering pre-professional ballet and modern dance summer intensives; partnering with our community through master classes, seminars, workshops, and other dance events - most offered free of charge; and training and supporting male dancers through the ground-breaking Estelle Dennis/Peabody Dance Training Program for Boys.

Salary Range

The referenced salary range represents the minimum and maximum salaries for this position and is based on Johns Hopkins University's good faith belief at the time of posting. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. The actual compensation offered to the selected candidate may vary and will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, internal equity, market conditions, education/training and other factors, as reasonably determined by the University.
