Purpose

The General Manager plans, directs and controls a large residential dining hall or multiple dining retail units as set out by the Assistant Vice President Dining. This role is responsible for analyzing all financial reports for their assigned dining unit(s) and ensuring compliance with University Housing and Dining (UHD) 5 Star standards of excellence with regard to customer service, cleanliness and quality. The General Manager will implement strategies to increase efficiency, maintain quality, and ensure continuous improvement.

Responsibilities
  • Plan, implement, and review strategy for operations to achieve budgeted goals for all units under responsibility. Develop and monitor Key Performance Indicators (KPI's) for units to track business trends, review plans for course correction with direct supervisor. Responsible for analyzing financial reports for areas of responsibility, as well as reviewing all financial measurements with the supervisor to optimize labor and food costs, and improve operational efficiency while maintaining high-quality service. Work with supervisory staff on P&L analysis and strategy development that ensures operations remain within budget. Participate in budgeting, financial planning, and cost-control initiatives that support UHD goals, student needs and financial sustainability.

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of managers, supervisors, line staff, and student workers. Motivate and inspire employees to achieve high performance and operational excellence. Participate in the recruitment, training, and retention of staff while fostering a collaborative and engaged work environment. Provide leadership and direction to managers with regards to financial targets and tracking, customer service goals, and HR related responsibilities. Enforce, review, and interpret safety and sanitation policies and procedures.

  • Drive a customer centric culture that focuses on turning customer interactions into customer experiences. Enhance customer service and student engagement through innovative dining programs and a 5-Star approach. Develop and maintain relationships with student organizations, staff, campus stakeholders, and administration. Participate in Dining Advisory groups and customer focus groups with an eye on improving the overall experiences of our campus customers. Promptly respond and effectively resolve customer concerns.

  • Participate in strategic planning and concept changes that enhance the dining experiences. Ensure high quality food and presentation during service. Collaborate closely with UHD Culinary leadership to ensure menu offerings reflect student preferences and needs. Provide oversight of inventory and ordering of food, supplies, and equipment. Provide guidance to staff regarding all local, state and federal agencies regulations concerning safety, health and sanitation regulations. Maintain active Manager Food Handlers Certification.

  • Represent the culture and values of UHD and UT at all times. Interact with the public, coworkers, and vendors, with respect, empathy and professionalism. Communicate respectfully at all levels and with everyone you encounter. Collaborate with dining leadership and UHD marketing in the development of marketing and communication plans to ensure customers are well informed of the services, special events, and meal options available in the dining unit. Work with other UHD departments and university stakeholders to support the broader UHD and campus mission and vision. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in business, food and nutrition, or a related field.

  • At least 4 years supervisory experience in food management in a large-scale food preparation or service operation.

  • Experience with operating standard cooking equipment.

  • Ability to complete and maintain active Manager Food Handlers Certification throughout employment.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Five or more years of supervisory experience in food management in a large-scale food preparation or service operation.

  • Experience using a computer menu management system similar to FoodPro and/or Chef-Tec.

  • Experience working in a large university setting.

  • Bilingual in Spanish.

  • Experience using Microsoft Office and computer systems.

  • Knowledgeable in all aspects of proper sanitation, food storage, and kitchen safety.

  • Professional demeanor and ability to work with a large staff and customer base.

Salary Range

$65,000+ depending on qualifications

Work Shift
  • Monday - Friday, 9:00AM - 6:00PM; including some weekends and evenings. Workdays, area, and hours may change due to the needs of the business.
