Job Summary

These positions report to the Senior Custodial Supervisor. Under supervision, oversee employees within an assigned area. Assists the Senior Custodian Supervisor with the following: Performs monthly building audits; provides training and/or retraining of staff; oversees special project work; inventories equipment and keys; ensures equipment is properly maintained; assists in supply orders and locker inventory; reviews work orders and performs follow up inspections for completion of work needed; works with senior supervisor on performance issues; writes and conducts performance appraisals; conducts safety and in-field meetings; provides back up coverage for supervisor as well as area coverage. Ensures equipment is properly maintained and custodial inventory is maintained. May assist other supervisors. Performs other assignments as required.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Required to hold a valid California driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program
  • High school diploma and two to five year of custodial experience.
  • Experience in the custodial profession and in assigning work, training and development, and performance counseling.
  • Experience operating machines, tools, and equipment used on the job: wet/dry mops; standard/hi-speed floor machines; square buffers; dry foam/wet extractor type carpet shampoo equipment; upright, back-pack and wet/dry vacuum cleaners; mop buckets and wringers; automatic (electric/battery) scrubbers.
  • Experience in effective oral and interpersonal communication skills to interact with all members of the campus community and staff on a variety of subjects including (but not limited to) work requests, customer service, complaints, and performance, as well as provide written reports and instructions, and develop processes for task assignment and completion.
  • Experience independently organizing work to achieve timely progress on multiple simultaneous projects, distribute effort appropriate among the projects, meet deadlines and maintain a high level of productivity.
  • Experience using computers and software applications such as Microsoft Windows, Word and Excel.
  • Knowledge of and experience in the established safety procedures in the use and handling of hazardous materials and toxic waste.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Supervisory experience including recruitment, training, setting work assignment, setting expectations, evaluating performance, and providing reward or corrective action as required.
  • Experience reading and interpreting technical, safety and MSDS documentation as it relates to the use of chemicals, equipment, and tools.
  • Knowledge of and experience in cleaning functions and related custodial techniques necessary to care for buildings used for a variety of different purposes on a large campus.
  • Skill to develop creative solutions to general problems attempt unfamiliar projects/assignments and respond with flexibility to requests for assistance.

Department Overview

Student Housing and Dining Services (SHDS) is a self-supporting auxiliary that provides housing and dining services to approximately 15,000 undergraduate, graduate, and students with families who live in on-campus residential facilities (university owner/managed and Public-Private-Partnerships), as well as providing residential, retail and catering dining services for the campus community. The Facilities Services unit is one of 6 major units within the SHDS Department. Facilities Services oversees all the daily maintenance, major maintenance, preventive maintenance, custodial services, capital projects and painting for SHDS. Facilities Services encompass approximately 1.9 million square feet and over 100 residential, dining, and administrative buildings.

The Custodial Services sub-unit of SHDS provides for daily custodial services in four residence hall areas, Solano Park Apartments, Segundo Services Center, Student Housing Administration Building, and off campus Student Housing Apartments.

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Smoking, the use of smokeless tobacco products, and the use of unregulated nicotine products (e-cigarettes) will be strictly prohibited on any UC Davis owned or leased property, indoors and outdoors, including parking lots and residential space.

Position will participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice System. A copy of DMV record will be required as a final condition of employment. Position may, at times, be required to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present. Specific hazards include custodial cleaning supplies such as acid cleaners, ammonia, lye and bleach as well as blood and other potentially infectious materials. Facilities may have asbestos-containing construction materials. Work in an area where there is constant traffic and in confined spaces. Work area can be dusty, wet and/or smelly. May be required to work a non-standard work week including one or both days of the weekend. Flexibility to be assigned to workweek of Friday- Tuesday, Tuesday-Saturday, or Sunday-Thursday depending on operational needs. Occasional overtime will be required. Will occasionally be asked to work during UC or national holidays. Vacation usage may be limited during peak workload periods. May be required to work on-call as needed.
