Job Summary

Under general supervision of the Shipping & Receiving Supervisor and with guidance from the Shipping & Receiving Lead technician, perform specimen receiving, accessioning and test assignment services of clinical diagnostic specimens. Provide shipping services of diagnostic specimens, supplies and other materials, and assist in maintaining the laboratory's central storeroom, all while providing excellent customer service to various internal and external clients. Answer phones and respond to client inquires. Provide information and guidance as to appropriate samples, sample handling, tests offered, fees, specimen packaging and shipping processes. This is not a research position; the position is located in a diagnostic laboratory in San Bernardino, CA. The position is client facing where attention to detail, time-management, quality control, quality assurance and meticulous working habits are essential.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Required to hold a valid California driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program
  • No minimum education required.
  • Experience providing excellent customer service to clients and skills to maintain confidentiality of client information.
  • Experience following laboratory procedures and protocols and in providing attention to detail and high-level accuracy.
  • Experience using computer skills to rapidly and accurately perform data entry and retrieval of data, and to utilize software programs such as StarLIMS, Word and Excel.
  • Skills to adapt and work in flexible conditions and to handle a high volume of work in a short period of time.
  • Skills to consistently follow standard operating procedures, safe working practices and handle/dispose of biohazardous/infectious materials.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and knowledge of and skills in veterinary/medical diagnostic laboratory test procedures and service functions.
  • Skills to work independently without direct supervision with organizational skills to prioritize workload and manage time to ensure that all job tasks are completed with careful attention to detail including labeling, identification, verification, matching and completing documentation all while meeting established deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a diagnostic laboratory setting.
  • General knowledge of Foreign Animal Diseases, Select Agents and other reportable diseases.
  • Diagnostic specimen and category 6.2 Dangerous Goods shipping experience.
  • Knowledge of microbiology, histology and immunology, to include optimal/deleterious storage/shipping conditions for the viability of various pathogens, biochemical constituents and integrity of host cells.
  • Knowledge of and skills to use various laboratory equipment including centrifuges, biohazard safety cabinets, glassware washers and autoclaves.

Department Overview

CAHFS provides California's livestock and poultry industries, and veterinary practitioners who serve them, with a full range of diagnostic laboratory services for disease control, enhancement of health management, and protection from diseases common to animal and humans. In meeting this need, the CAHFS also serves as the backbone of California's disease warning system through its animal disease surveillance program. The system consists of four laboratories currently located in Davis, Turlock, Tulare and San Bernardino. Funding for this program is provided through a contract with the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) and through revenue generated from user fees. An additional program, the Equine Analytical Chemistry Laboratory, is funded through a contract with the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) and horse wagering monies and provides full-service drug testing and a pharmacology research and development program.

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday (Work Schedule to be determined, anticipated to be mid-morning to mid-afternoon, four to five days per week).
