Job Announcement

Reston Community Center, an agency of Fairfax County Government in Virginia, is seeking to fill one Assistant Theatre Technical Director full-time merit position (S20) to start by the end of October. Successful applicant will be trained technical theatre operations, equipment and crew management for a year-round calendar of performances. RCC presents a professional touring artist series, hosts several community-based arts organizations, and offers the community a year-round calendar of special events.

This position organizes and oversees technical elements, operations, and staff for performances and events scheduled in the RCC Theatre (The Leila Gordon Theatre) and for productions and events of the Arts & Events Department and agency as assigned. This includes assisting with operation of equipment, implementation of designs, crew supervision, production meetings, coordination of and technical support for performances, department construction, maintenance of tools and scenic storage, creation of technical drawings, and development of production cues. Advanced experience with digital sound equipment and engineering and extensive experience with theatre lighting and sound equipment, hand and power tools, manual counterbalanced and motorized rigging systems, video systems, special effects equipment and related accessories and equipment is required.

In addition, supervises and trains technical staff and volunteers within the certification programs in accordance with established curricula. Further, the ATTD performs routine and highly technical, preventive and emergency maintenance work on theatre equipment and systems; maintains maintenance and supply records; and assists with inventory, planning and preservation of RCC theatrical equipment and systems. The position functions with a high degree of independent judgment and is expected to possess independent technical expertise in supervising day-to-day operations.

The position works under the direct supervision of the theatre technical director and in the absence of the theatre technical director assumes the responsibilities of that position.

Schedule: Occasionally more than 40 hours per week with supervisor approval, due to workload and scheduled events. Work shifts vary due to theatre schedule and programming; includes day, night, and weekend shifts.


Illustrative Duties

  • Supervises the work of the scene shop staff, including professional and volunteer carpenters, painters, riggers and property crafts-persons;
  • Controls inventory and maintenance of all scene shop tools and equipment;
  • Serves as master technician during stage performances including the technical installation of equipment;
  • Conducts training in all areas of technical theater work;
  • Performs or leads preventive and emergency maintenance on stage lighting instruments, cables and controls, sound system, and rigging system;
  • Assists the Technical Theater Director in developing designs for lighting, scenery, sound and stage effects by creating technical drawings of construction details and lighting plots;
  • Assists the supervisor during health and safety inspections and regularly enforces applicable codes for theatrical technical operations.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the techniques of theater technical operations including rigging, sound systems, lighting and set construction;
  • Ability to train and supervise others;
  • Some knowledge of applicable safety codes and common hazards associated with theater technology;
  • Ability to create technical drawings for set construction details and lighting plots.

Employment Standards

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university; plus, formal training in the theater arts, and two years of technical theatrical experience involving work with lighting, sound and stage sets

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
Lift Pro Mobile Elevating Work Platform Operator Training (Required within 12 months)

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to the position will be required to complete a criminal background check and Child Protective Services Registry check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in technical theatre, theatre arts, arts management or a related field; plus four years of technical theatre on-the-job experience, including two years of supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of Yamaha or similar digital sound consoles and Dante systems, ETC or similar lighting consoles and systems, LED equipment and systems, QLab Live Show Control, Vectorworks, Lightwright, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word.
  • Experience with power and hand tools.
  • Lift Pro Mobile Elevating Work Platform Operator Training required within 12 months of start date.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work may require considerable strenuous physical exertion, such as frequent climbing of tall ladders and stairs, lifting and pulling. Employee will be required to do some walking, standing, bending, and carrying/lifting items up to 50 pounds in weight. Requires manual dexterity and flexibility of limbs, balance and ability to withstand heights up to 50 feet. Requires excellent hearing and vision.
