Position description

Junior/Assistant Specialist in Autoimmune T Cell Biology

Study the targets of T cells that cause autoimmune diseases

Job Summary

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented researcher to join our team in a new lab at UCSF focused on understanding how T cells recognize and attack self-tissues in autoimmune diseases. Our research combines new, cutting-edge antigen discovery platforms, molecular and cellular immunology, and synthetic biology to uncover the molecular targets of pathogenic T cells. The goal of our work is to advance diagnosis, prognosis, and targeted therapies for autoimmune disorders. Successful candidates will work closely with a collaborative team of immunologists, molecular biologists, and clinicians. Responsibilities may include human and mouse cell culture, flow cytometry, molecular cloning, recombinant protein work, and high-throughput antigen discovery assays, as well as basic computational data analysis. No prior experience with all these methods is required; training will be provided. This position offers an excellent opportunity to gain advanced skills in immunology and translational research.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning, executing, and analyzing experiments related to T cell antigen discovery.
  • Perform molecular biology techniques such as cloning, PCR, and plasmid preparation.
  • Culture mammalian cells and perform cell-based assays.
  • Assist in flow cytometry-based experiments and analysis.
  • Contribute to data analysis using Python or R and maintain accurate experimental records.
  • Collaborate with team members on protocol optimization and troubleshooting.

Required Qualifications

  • Junior Specialist: Bachelor's degree in biology, Immunology, Molecular Biology, Bioengineering, or related field, or at least four years of research experience.
  • Assistant Specialist: Master's degree in one of the above disciplines, or a bachelor's degree with three or more years of research/laboratory experience.
  • Strong interest in immunology and willingness to learn new techniques.
  • Good organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with mammalian cell culture, molecular cloning, or basic immunology assays.
  • Familiarity with flow cytometry.
  • Experience with Python, R, or other tools for data analysis.
  • Understanding of basic statistical methods.
