Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Cell Biology and Physiology is a broad and interdisciplinary basic science department in the School of Medicine at UNC-CH. As a top-ranked, nationally recognized leader in basic science research, our faculty and staff are engaged in innovative and cutting-edge research in the areas of neuroscience, cardiovascular biology, cellular cytoskeleton, cell motility and imaging. The Department houses one PhD program: the Cell Biology and Physiology Curriculum in which there are currently enrolled 48 PhD candidates. The Department has approximately 55 faculty engaged in basic science research, education, and national service. Many faculty and their laboratories provide training for undergraduate and postgraduate trainees in the biomedical sciences. The department also has 2 Core Facilities to expedite the mission of our researchers.
Position Summary
The Khan Lab studies the molecular mechanisms of signal transduction in neural cells, and how these pathways go awry in neurodegenerative diseases (i.e., Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Tauopathies). We are currently investigating the structure and function of neural primary cilia in disease states. The lab is seeking a Research Technician to assist with rodent handling (colony management, perfusions and brain tissue sections), cell culture (iPSC and fibroblast-derived neurons and astrocytes), molecular assays and cloning (i.e., RNA in situ hybridization, plasmid vector construction), microscopy (i.e., confocal, Airyscan super-resolution imaging), and DNA/ RNA/protein isolation for -omics based analyses. The Research Technician will also perform data analysis and must maintain detailed laboratory records. It is also expected that the Research Technician will assist the lab with basic management duties.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Wet lab experience
Rodent handling ability
Cell culture experience
Basic understanding of neuroscience and cell biology

Research experience in Neurobiology
Rodent handling and mouse colony management
Rodent perfusions and microtome sectioning
Experience with immunohistochemistry and confocal imaging
Experience with molecular assays and cloning
Strong communication and organizational skills
