Position description

UCLA Extension is considered one of the top programs of its kind, offering to more than 35,000 students per year approximately 4,500 classes and non-degree certificate programs to meet the professional development, continuing education, and personal enrichment needs of the full spectrum of nontraditional students as well as companies and organizations throughout and beyond the Los Angeles region.


Course / Program Description

Pathway at UCLA Extension is a two-year college program for students who identify as neurodiverse, offering a blend of educational, social, and vocational experiences. On campus, Pathway students attend classes and participate in the many social, recreational and cultural activities of a major university.

Students who successfully complete the program receive an award of completion in Learning and Life Skills and are invited to attend the annual UCLA Extension graduation ceremony.

This course is a 3 part series in Career Development. Designed exclusively for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities this student-directed course prepares Pathway students for their fieldwork experience by focusing on a variety of career exploration activities. Upon an initial evaluation of a student's career readiness and skill levels, activities include setting realistic career goals, preparing effective resumes, participating in mock interviews, and behaving and dressing appropriately in the workplace. Internship and/or job development options will be pursued upon mastery of these activities and/or skills.


Job Description

This is a part-time contracted position for 2 classes per week taking place on monday/wednesday and/or monday/friday (approximately 2.5-5 hours per week)

This course is for the the Pathway program. Pathway at UCLA Extension is a postsecondary education program for students 18-26 with intellectual or developmental diagnoses. Pathway's goal is to prepare neurodivergent young adults for employment, independent living, and a capacity for self-directed lifelong learning through higher education at UCLA.

This instructor will be running the course, adjusting the set curriculum for the class's needs, and working with the program manager to make sure all students are able to do basic note-taking, prioritizing, and calendar planning by the end of this course.


Instructor Duties:

The instructor will run this course of 12-15 students twice weekly with the assistance of 1 Instructor Assistant. This course will take place in person in Westwood Village. The instructor will be provided the syllabus and course content, but is encouraged to build their own teachings and expand on previous lessons.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Bachelor's degree, teaching credentials, or equivalent years of experience.*
  • Ability and interest to work with adult neurodivergent students. (preferred)
  • Ability to add to and revise syllabi based on Pathway curriculum.(preferred)
  • Understand and be able to incorporate the use of technology such as time management apps into lessons.
  • Willingness to commit to January-June teaching schedule (2.5 - 5 hours per week).

Preferred qualifications

Ability and interest to work with adult neurodivergent students. (preferred)

Ability to add to and revise syllabi based on Pathway curriculum.(preferred)
