DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this position, you will support a bridge inspection team leader by engaging in various technical tasks related to the assessment of bridges and other structures, adhering to the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS). Your responsibilities will include conducting or assisting with safety inspections of existing bridges, focusing on critical structural elements such as foundations, supports, and various components. You will evaluate all structural parts, including concrete footings, abutments, wing walls, bearings, back walls, steel beams, girders, truss members, pre-stressed concrete beams, timber constructions, bridge decks, wearing surfaces, expansion devices, approach slabs, relief joints, piers, bents, rivets, bolts, welds, and safety features like parapets and guide rails. Inspections will also involve assessing conditions such as damage from accidents, water erosion of footings, and the wear or corrosion of steel components, while meticulously measuring bridge members, documenting deterioration, and rating the condition of various elements.

Additionally, you will prepare comprehensive bridge inspection reports that detail your findings on the current state and any deficiencies identified during inspections. Your role will extend to assisting with underwater inspections, crane evaluations, and various deck surveys, as well as maintaining accurate bridge inspection records, which include data logged in BMS2, iForms, photographs, and field sketches. You will also help ensure that bridge inspection equipment is well-maintained and that inspections are conducted on a two-year cycle, encompassing annual, semi-annual, crane, and special inspections. Furthermore, you will inventory and document the condition of overhead sign structures, roadway retaining walls, and high mast lighting, while ensuring compliance with Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) documentation requirements for all state-owned structures. Ultimately, you will assist in the preparation of organized and thorough bridge inspection reports that address all critical findings regarding the current condition of the structures inspected.
